Bumgenius Nappy Advice

Hi,
I'm 6mnths pregnant with my first & thinking of using Bumgenius rather than disposables but my concern is when out & about the thought of carrying soiled smelly nappies around with me, can anyone out there that uses washable nappies advise what they do to combat this, or are they so 'genius' they don't smell?
Many thanks! Ekky

No, cloth nappies don't smell :) Disposable nappies smell repulsive, 'cos of the chemicals in them, but you put any poop down the loo with cloth, and cloth nappies , in a wetbag, don't smell at all.

I've used BumGenius since DS was born. He's now six months and I love them. I'll admit I often use disposables when out and about as I find it easier (Sainsbury's Eco ones or Nature babycare ones that are biodegradable) but when I've carried soiled nappies in a waterproof drawstring bag it's never been a problem. Newborn poo smells like toffee yoghurt and now that we've started to wean I just use disposable liners so I'm not carrying poo around.

We use the bumgenius nappies in the day and love them (we use tots bots bamboo ones at night as they are more absorbent, but take a lot longer to dry when washed). They are stored in a nappy bucket or wet bag if out and you would not notice the smell. The nursery likes them too as they are easy to use.

We do use Eco disposables if away and when dd was first born as I had enough to cope with without the extra washing.

I would potentially recommend getting some samples and trying them out before investing in loads. People find that some nappies don't fit some children or that you need something more absorbent, etc.

Those really cheap baggies sold next to the baby wipes in the supermarket (about 15p for 100), work fine - bag up nappy, maybe double-bag a particularly hideous one after flushing it down the loo a bit, in usual nappy bag/carrier bag - no problem even in summer.

Breastfed poo hardly smells of anything anyway.

I found Bumgenius worked very well on tall skinny dn but not so well on stocky chubby ds who was much better in Motherease/Kushies/Blueberries, so recommend getting a mixture of styles.

Hi all, thanks so much for the advice, it's very much appreciated. I'm definitely going to give them a go based on that, and will take the mix & match approach until I know what works best.
Brilliant!... Thanks, Ekky

I found the Blueberry wetbags/laundry bags good. They have a little patch inside the "wet" bit that is supposed to neutralise smells - not sure if it works or not but the bag doesn't smell even when it's full of dirty nappies.
