ADHD parents

Everyone needs to see this: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2046924/Parent-child-ADHD-Have-free-car-1-5bn-taxpayer-funded-scheme.html

I'm so angry I can barely speak. Would anyone be prepared to join me in putting together some sort of pressure group to stop this? I could have cried when it mentioned naughty child syndrome. I think my son has ADHD and he gets overstimulated and is frightened. Why shouldn't such families be entitled to a car? SN, mental or physical massively impact on any family. I'm sure there are better brains than mine who can think of a way to make a stand. Please feel free to include any ideas or thoughts and perhaps we can consolidate them and try to fight this.

Sorry, I think you're going to have to explain to me a bit more (because I don't understand) why a family with an ADHD child should be 'entitled' to a car...

Though I agree with your dislike of the use of 'naughty child syndrome'.

Justlostitwithhim · 09/10/2011 02:06

Hi Selks. It is extremely difficult to safely navigate a child with ADHD through pedestrian areas and they are frequently insulted and derided on public transport. This affects their mobility and that of their family massively.

My son has ADHD and autism. Sorry to disappoint the Daily Mail and any readers which might frequent MN but I DON'T receive a"free car" nor am I entitled to one.

Hi Dilly, I have 3 with autism and one with suspected autism and ADHD. Thankfully, I have my own car. I do think that you should be entitled to one. I realise that there are people who think that parents who ask for that level of support are spongers, but I disagree. I've worked with people with ADHD in their families whose lives are complicated by poverty and I it can be truly devastating. I don't usually read the DM but I couldn't sleep last night and I was truly disgusted by this. Thanks for your input. We've never claimed anything for ours because we've never needed to, but for those families that can it must be a lifeline.

Thanks Justlost. But just for the most severe ADHD surely?

Dillydaydreaming · 09/10/2011 12:30

As a parent who might be without a car soon Sad I would love to qualify but it appears DS is too high functioning despite his distraction at roadsides!
Just get so annoyed by this kind of irresponsible reporting. Thankfully a good many comments on the site appear to be of the " what a load of tripe" variety.

Speaking as the parent of a child with a painful chronic joint disorder, I can perfectly well see why a child with severe problems arising from AHDH should be entitled to a mobility car while dd is not. It is a lot easier to deal with a child who simply cannot walk than a child who has to be restrained.

Thanks everyone - your comments are really valuable Smile
