Bed wetting.. what to do?

my ds1 is 5.5 and recently has started to wet the bed at night. He has done it three times now int he past week. I have done the toilet before bed, going in as I go to bed, and ask him if needs (sort of dream peeing) and really am looking to the knowledge of mumsnet to help.

Will be back later today, as am looking after friends dds today, and we are making gingerbread things to hang on the christmas trees

hope you can help

go to the GPs to exclude any physical cause such as a UTI
ask if there is anything worrying him
limit fizzy drinks - juice/water will irritate his bladder less
encourage him to drink plenty during day
ERIC website should have lots of useful advice on this

Second the advice of the ERIC website, they have loads of useful info. My DS1 is almost 7 now, he was dry for about a year or more then started wetting again when he was around 5 1/2. I spoke to his teacher about it because he was also needing to go loads at School and wet himself on a couple of occasions, she asked me to take him to the Dr, the Dr took a test and nothing was found but it is best to check it out just in case. We find DS1 is best if we give him loads to drink during the day (think the ERIC website recommends 8 drinks a day), he now knows that water is best for him and drinks mostly water but also has milk and diluted pure apple juice, things like squash, ribena and fizzy drinks make him worse. He can be dry up to 10 nights in a row now but the minute you take the Pull-ups off him he is wet again.

As far as I understand they won't do anything until the child is over 7 and wetting after a period of being dry is normal and has a name (although I can't remember what it is now).

Hope things improve, in the end we put DS1 back in Pull-ups as the wetting was stressing us all out, he now has the aim of having 10 dry nights in a row before we will take the Pull-ups off again and although this has happened on a few occasions he has always started wetting again to the point that we put the Pull-ups back on.

I believe it can be hereditary, DH apparently wet the bed until he was 12 , although there were also psychological reasons for it in his case.

I should add, loads to drink during the day but last drink at around 6pm with his dinner, he goes to bed around 7.30pm, needs loads of encouragement to do a wee before bed but this seems to be getting better. It is almost as if he cannot locate the muscles to make himself wee even if he doesn't need desperately.

Also tried lifting him before we went to bed but was advised not to as putting a sleepy child on the toilet reinforces it being OK to wee whilst sleeping IYSWIM.
