I need MN to help me on this one.......

DD (9.6) has decided she no longer wants to wear vests. She has not started puberty yet, so no development in the chest area, IYSWIM.

She was looking at the starter bras in M&S at the weekend. I've told her she's too young to wear a bra yet and she would need something there before i would buy one.

She got upset , she says all her friends at school wear them.Hmm

She doesn't like crop tops as they ride up under her shirt,so she says!!

I've told her she will be cold in the winter without a vest, but she's standing firm on this one.

Before anyone says i'm the parent, i know i am, but i want an easy life. GrinThere's better things to fight over, other than vests.Grin

TIA x

This is my point Menop...I don't like the idea of DD wearing a bra while she has no development there.

DD was telling me today that X was wearing a bra, although my DD is the smallest in the class, child x is only slightly bigger.

DD doesn't watch Eastenders etc.. nor do i Grin

I have to agree with Fennel, if DD was 11/12 and in secondary school, then i would leave it up to her what she wears!

You have to let them grow up and i'm sorry to say that peer pressure is a big thing in today's society.

It's all about guiding your child into adulthood and choosing your battles!Grin .

DD1 (9.4) wears a vest once weather gets colder. She has some nice ones with spaghetti straps for milder weather, and will probably wear t-shirt type vests in the cold weather (and a long sleeve T).
Must keep an eye out to see what the rest of her class is wearing. Didn't think this would be a concern until next year! Like her mom, DD1 is not very observant about what others are wearing, so won't even notice unless it becomes a topic of conversation...

Could you compromise on a strappy top from somewhere like Topshop (/Primark)? Then when her friends say "why are you wearing a vest?" she can say "it's not, it's from Topshop", but equally there is an extra layer there

Absolutely nothing wrong with wearing vests at that age unless they obviously need a bra. However I understand where your dd is coming from, of course she doesn't want to be the only one.

My oldest dd is 10 and has started developing - she wears white crop tops from M and S like many of her friends. Dd2 is 8.5 and still wears vests in the winter and as far as I know she's still happy to wear one.

If she doesn't want to wear a vest I wouldn't push the issue. Vests don't provide that much warmth, she'll be fine in school shirt and jumper. She can always wear a fitted t-shirt under her shirt if it's very cold.

When she starts developing though, crop tops are great as a half way house between vest and bra. Try and find some stretchy ones with lycra, maybe they won't ride up as much.

My dd 11yrs 11mon 165 cm tall wears a crop top and has done for about 1/2 a yr we might get her a proper bra soon as she is not overweight but has large shoulders and finds the m and s crop tops quite tight. But we prob wouldn't get her a padded bra . My 9.5 dd is flat and wears nothing and I wouldn't buy her a crop top. Both of them stopped wearing vests about 6 years ago.

All my children still wear vests :P my dd(14) doesn't have anything there,, but she wears those crop vests and a normal vest over it in months with an r in it. Same with my younger two although my ds prefers wearing tshirts and my other dd I will not allowed her wear a crop top
