massage for baby with dry skin

Can anyone recommend an oil/lotion that is suitable to use for babies with dry skin? Tried Johnsons baby oil and it dries her skin out, makes a bit rashy. Her dad has excema (excuse my spelling!). Someone mentioned organic sunflower oil to me??

Cheers.

Olive oil is fine IME

DD had very dry skin as a newborn and the MW recommended it

MrsHoolie · 18/09/2011 13:38

My DS has excema. A very good moisturiser to buy is Aveeno,it's oat based and works well.
We also bathe DS very rarely (1/2 times a week) and use a handful of porridge oats (in a pop sock) in his bath which is very soothing.
I haven't heard about sunflower oil although we did use olive oil on him when he was newborn.

Sorry I thought your dc had excema but just reread your post Blush
anyway all things mentioned above should keep the skin nice and hydrated.

Thanks for the replies- Mrshoolie, I have a feeling she may end up with excema, she is only 3 months old at the moment though and currently just very dry skin that flares up easily.

I will try these things. Thanks.

Take her to the docs and ask for Centraben cream(have seen it online but not in shops, plus its free at docs), its the best cream i have ever come across for dry skin and eczema...Ahem after ds cleared up i used it on me!!

Worth a go...

Olive oil and just plain water for washing.

GruffalowsMammy · 18/09/2011 17:09

I've been using cod liver oil (3 for 2 in boots) in does smell but has worked wonders on rashes and dry skin.

minibmw2010 · 18/09/2011 20:08

I used olive virgin olive oil when DS was a newbie (he's 17 weeks now) but now I just use bathwater and Oulatim cream.

i use this solid coconut massage oil for babies i got from waitrose. nice and gentle on his skin and he doesn't smell like he's about to be cooked like olive oil!

we used olive oil as well which worked well although DD smelled a bit weird, but DH swears by it - he's actually now decided its a good mosquito repellent too...

Pinner35 · 18/09/2011 21:56

I used organic sunflower oil and my DD's skin was (and still is) beautiful. I bought a big bottle reasonably cheaply in Sainsburys.

Our 4 month old has very dry skin on his face since birth, Doctor diagnosed excema (my husband suffered as a child too) and we have since used aqueous cream on abundance on his face and his skin is loads better, only one little stubborn patch on his cheek left (and this mainly because it rubs on his clothes and bibs etc) but otherwise all cleared up nicely. Still have to use daily to keep his skin hydrated butwould highly recommend.

Plus forgot to mention, Dermalo bath oil which is also very good. We bathe DS every night and his skin has been really soft since. This is available on prescription from GP along with aqueous cream which will save you some money as the bath oil can be pricey.

I used olive oil at baby massage, but almond oil was also suggested. Used to say I was basting the baby - massage teacher a bit Hmm - don't think she shared my sense of humour.

boognish · 23/09/2011 22:28

Our midwives have been telling us that new research has shown that olive oil is no longer recommended for babies, something to do with the skin getting used to it and then not moisturising itself properly. But perhaps this is just what happens to skin in time, whatever oil you put on it. (I've always had dry skin and find changing products from time to time helps). Natural products are best. You didn't say how old your baby is, but an alternative to try out might be Organic at heart's mummy and baby balm (from Waitrose). All the ingredients are natural, and it contains camomile and oat, which are both brilliant for eczema.

mamofK · 23/09/2011 22:35

I've used almond oil on DD since she was six weeks old, now 21 months, and I've found it great. She has fab skin, but would be prone to very dry inflamed skin on her face especially without regular attention. The massage really chills her our before bedtime as well, so she sleeps great afterwards.

Svrider · 24/09/2011 16:27

My midwife suggested grape seed oil. I was a bit Hmm but it worked. You can massage it into the skin , and put it in bath water. Don't put any other bubble bath or shampoo in.
Beware baby will be very slippy!
Dont put it on any broken skin though

Tonksforthememories · 24/09/2011 16:35

We use Aveeno on Ds, he has horrible dry skin which is prone to flare up. We found that creams with SLS in actually made it worse and Aveeno doesn't have it in. You can get it on prescription too. SLS is in a lot of bath stuff too, for babies Halos and Horns is really good and reasonably priced.

DS is 2 and is starting to grow out of his problem skin, but the stuff i found works so well i don't want to stop using it!

HumanKind Organics, I swear by it. Cleared up my baby's dry skin & my husband's psoriasis & we haven't looked back! I could notice the improvement of my baby's dry skin within a couple of days. On the off chance my husband tried it too, he has suffered with psoriasis for years & nothing else seems to have helped in the long run. We've been using HumanKind Organics for about six months now & my baby & my husband have no skin complaints. It's wonderful. As the name says, it is all organic (I checked out all the ingredients) & it?s very reasonably priced. I get it through ebay, shower gel/shampoo/soap & cream.
