Or maybe its just me!!!

Was invited to the house of a woman and child i vaguely know through mums group etc yesterday so off I trotted. When I got there she only had a couple of toys out which I thought was odd Thnought plan was for kids to play while we drank tea in as relative peace as poss - is always my plan anyway!! Ds quickly got bored with said toys so I got out a couple of his that I had with me as were going to friends with no children after. Other mum Looked absolutely horrified and told me in no uncertain terms to put them away as they weren't suitalbe for children under 12 months and our babies were only 11 months!! WTF??? It was a book with unsuitable picutres apparently!!!! (not the kama sutra I hasten to add, but an animal one), and yes some cars which if you read the box said 12-36 months cos obviously that extra 3 weeks is going to make all the difference! Oh and she also obesessively wiped down every toy when either of the boys put it down EVERY single time.

Please tell me this behaviour is not normal or will begin to doubt my parenting skills - V bad mum dont care bout age on toys - obv safety/unsuitability withsatanding!! - and dont clean toys every 2 seconds =- if ever

totally, utterly weird!!
Sounds like she has a problem.

I assume this is her first child?

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 13:21

No no, it's not you, it's her!

Sheesh, and I feel all lazy-2nd-time-mum because I let my toddler play with lots of not-suitable-for-under-3s toys.

tortoiseshell · 13/12/2005 13:21

defintitely loopy. Toys should never be taken out of the steriliser. What was she thinking allowing them on the carpet. People have WALKED on the carpet - probably without taking their shoes off - imagine all the germs that her baby (and yours) have ingested. I would phone NHS Direct if I were you.

motherinfurrierfestivehat · 13/12/2005 13:22

I'm still rivetted by the 'unsuitable pictures' (as someone whose two year old frolics happily with all sorts of Toys With Small Parts). The mind boggles.

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 13/12/2005 13:24

good lord, she'd die if she saw what ds3 was playing with at 11 months.
With a 3 and 5 yr old older brither he never played with toys designs for him.

She's as mad as a box of frogs!

alLIOluia · 13/12/2005 13:24

Officially odd

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 13:25

I'm lucky if I can get my mobile phone, keys, kitchen utensils and knives off DS2.

(I wish I was kidding about the knives - he's worked out where knives go in the dishwasher, and reaches up to get them out! I've found him toddling happily across the kitchen floor, with a knife in each hand!)

Auntybrandybutter · 13/12/2005 13:26

poor neurotic (shouldnt have said that co i cant spell it!!) women!!!

CaRowlers · 13/12/2005 13:26

She's cwackers.
Poor woman - sounds like she may have OCD?
Poor child too.

pinkmagic1 · 13/12/2005 13:29

Absolutely stark raving mad! I feel sorry for her child.

JonesTheSteamingSanta · 13/12/2005 13:29

She's obviously insane!!!

(Does she let her children play with any of the toys in playgroup?)

OnTheFlossDayOfChristmas · 13/12/2005 13:29

Good god. I am supposed to clean DS's indoor toys?

tuppenceworth · 13/12/2005 13:32

She's mad and neurotic, not you!!

For what it's worth my ds, aged 2 and two months, does jigsaws for age 3+ very happily, plays with toys that have been handed down and are years old and even plays very happily with his cousin's beady things (forgotten what they're called - the ones that you make pictures on a board, put a sheet of paper over them and iron them to make like a mat thingy) He's not going to swallow them because he knows not to put them in his mouth, not that I leave him home alone to play with them anyway.

Trust your judgement!

katylou25 · 13/12/2005 13:33

Thank god its not only me - Not inviting her to my my house she'd have a fit when ds plays with the remotes, empties the kitchen cupboards, plays with my keys, mobile, lipstick etc will watch her very closely a t playgroup tomorrow to see if x is actually allowed to play with toys! Thinking back now she is always, always, armed with a loaded pack of wet wipes, ready to strike at any moment!

LIZS · 13/12/2005 13:34

avoid her !! she is an extrememely paranoid ftm. Does she ever let her baby out of her sight ?

ParrupupumScum · 13/12/2005 13:34

Clearly a fruit loop. How did you respond? Hard one when presented with such bizarreness, I'd think!

Auntybrandybutter · 13/12/2005 13:35

Hama beads!!
Mine plays with kitchen bin never mind cupboards..in training to be a tramp i think!!! Eats leftovers out of it. Itry to keep it fastened but not everyone remembers!!

PotPourri · 13/12/2005 13:42

Very strange. She must have OCD or something - poor kid will be as sickly as they come if he is not coming into contact with ANY germs. Best to avoid meeting up with her again I would say. I agree, as if 3 weeks is going to make a big difference - I must be the worst mum in the world with the toys I give DD, and the food I give her etc etc. She isn't 1 until this friday so I should maybe have kept aside some toys until that magic date when she overnight becomes able to cope with them!

pablopatito · 13/12/2005 13:45

Now I'm no expert but it sounds like OCD. That doesn't make her "mad", or "weird", or "neurotic", or "insane", or "crackers", or a "fruity loop" and I think you're all being mean to suggest that, and to make jokes about it. Neither does it mean you need to feel sorry for her child, she may be a brilliant mother and her child may be the happiest, most loved child in the world. Some people just have disorders to varying degrees.

Twiglett · 13/12/2005 13:46

no its you

the ages on the boxes are a rule which may not be bent .. even for a matter of days

she's quite right

and no child needs more than 2 toys at a time

snurk

Twiglett · 13/12/2005 13:47

um .. if she does have uncontrolled OCD then you do need to feel sorry for the child IMHO

pablopatito · 13/12/2005 13:58

Twiglett, maybe she has controlled OCD? Who knows?

Maybe she is struggling. Maybe she is member of mumsnet and gets support from it. She invites someone round for tea and the next thing she knows she is being crucified by everyone on the very forum she uses for support, being told she is mad and should be avoided. Maybe she's reading all these comments right now in floods of tears.

Who knows? But I just don't think the comments people have made are fair or within the philosophy of mumsnet.
