Urgent - Anyone done a long-haul flight with cloth nappies???

Going to USA tomorrow, and today had him in disposables so I can wash the cloth all ready for taking, but he's already leaked today all over clothes and I don't know if I want to keep changing him on the plane as he hates it. Also disposables smell so bad!
But if I took cloth, how many would I need to take, and would they let me on with that big a changing bag?! And would all the dirties fit in my 2 Tots Bots nappy bags. And would they stink the place out?
And if the answer is disposables, then how many changes of clothes do I need to take to cope with the leaks?? Its a 20hr total trip.
Oh in case it helps I'm using terries with fleece liners and ME wraps

I also use cloth but used disposables for the plane, already had too many things to carry on....
For 20 hours I'd bring 4 or 5 babygros and about 6-8 nappies. That is of course overestimating, but you'd rather have too many than too few.
have a lovely trip

Oh blimey, you are saintly! Go for disposables, maybe a different brand? Pampers babydry worked for us mostly when ds was that little.

Good luck.

Disposable with ME wrap over the top, to contain the leaks. Take as many wraps as you've got, and rinse them out in the plane loo if you have to.

I think you could probably quite successfully wash the liners in the toilets. Depending on the queue to the toilets....
With disposables I tend to change every three hours or so (immediately if the baby has done a pooh). If your baby's nappy is leaking, you might want ot try the next size up. Hope you have a nice trip.

And try a different brand of disposables. If your baby is on the small side, Tescos do a size below newborn which we found worked pretty well.

I guess you don't have time to try out different disposables now though.

You won't notice the smell of them after a day or so, honest...

Thanks for your help - great idea putting the wraps over the disposables, fruitful! I will definitely do that! When I told DH he seemed to think that was the obvious conclusion and wondered why I hadn't already done it!

I'm using huggies - have tried pampers and tescos. And too late to buy another size!

Hana thanks for the estimate tho I think i probably need more than 8 nappies as he squirts constantly, and decides to do the works just as I put a clean nappy on!

Def try a wrap over the top, that way you get the convenience without the leaks onto the clothes. And changing a baby in the tiny toilet is just not what you want!!

beartime · 13/12/2005 00:55

oh the thought of it... maybe I'll put my changing mat on my lap or something and point his rear end towards DH...

I wouldn't rinse out fleeces is a plane loo. It's not a water flush, just some violently coloured blue disinfectant, plus the suction is pretty powerful.
Changing a tiny baby in the loo is fine. It's the enormous 2 year old toddlers I have problems with!

bobbybobbobbingalong · 13/12/2005 05:33

I'd take a whole packet of disposibles, they will let you on the plane with that as the consequences of you running out are too horrible to contemplate.

Cloth nappies and planes - well I just wouldn't. But the wraps over the dispi sounds like an excellent idea.

Which airline are you travelling with? Qantas were very strict about only changing babies in the toilets.
