the other day my OH told our DD to 'say ta'. It made me cringe...i just hate it. does anyone else have issues with language taught to babies or is it just me?

Sorry, but I really dislike 'ta' and am encouraging my DD to say 'thank you' both by asking her to say it or showing her by example.

Jaquelinehyde · 06/09/2011 18:53

Yuck, yuck, yuck TA is bloody foul!

AnnieLobeseder · 06/09/2011 18:57

If you genuinely use 'ta' in your daily speech, then by all means use it with your baby too.

But if you don't use it, what the blue fuck is the point of teaching your baby a non-word which it will only have to 'unlearn'.

I get particularly annoyed by people who will hold out their hand to baby for something that baby has got and go, "Ta, ta, ta..." until baby hands the item over. Surely that just teaches baby that 'ta' means 'I want that thing you've got'?

Goodness, and there I was feeling proud of my polite little one-year-old who's first reliable verbal communication is 'ta' when given something, or taking something..

Personally I lump this no baby talk thing in with strict baby lead weaning. You're helping the child to communicate while they can't manage the complicated stuff, just as I'm fine about helping my son get yoghurt in his mouth because there's no way he has the co-ordination yet to do it himself.

rocketty · 06/09/2011 19:03

I loathe the word ta. Fortunately, the children don't say it.

issynoko · 06/09/2011 19:07

Hate it too and taught them 'thankyou' from the start. Mostly started sounding like 'sankoo'. Don't understand the 'ta' thing. They have to learn other words by listening to how adults speak. Underestimating babies abilities seems pretty common sadly.

Octaviapink · 06/09/2011 19:53

'Ta' is horrible lazy slang. DD said 'tankoo' as soon as she was saying anything. I agree with the language modelling - both DH and I say please and thank you a lot to each other and to DD and she says both quite naturally.

Crumbletopping · 06/09/2011 19:59

Thank you is much better.

GetThePartyStarted · 06/09/2011 20:12

DS can sign thank-you, and say a perfectly clear "ank-oo" but nursery still get him to say ta instead which I hate as I am a snob too

Deesus · 06/09/2011 20:18

I still use the word ta...most days I reckon....Blush

SuePurblybilt · 06/09/2011 20:19

Ta is vile and pointless, unless you happen to say it yourself in everyday speech.
I was behind a woman in a shop yesterday who held a sweet out of reach of the child in a buggy saying 'say ta-ta to Nanny boo-boo'. How is that or gran-gran or dad-dad easier or better than saying Granny or Daddy or Thank-you?
What used to really piss me off was the nursery or random people saying to DD 'say ta' before giving her anything and basically expecting her to use 'ta' in place of 'please'. WTF? For one thing, she used please and thank-you and had no clue what 'ta' was. And for two - why before you give it to them?

Sorry, touched a nerve there, clearly Grin

usualsuspect · 06/09/2011 20:58

you lazy slang using vile commoner you Wink

ChippingIn · 06/09/2011 21:06
Pagwatch · 06/09/2011 21:09

I use ta. But my dd is very posh. She doesn't say ta. But she does say bollocks.

does that make me common? Confused

usualsuspect · 06/09/2011 21:17

I don't think its common to say ta

but others on this thread obviously do

bejeezus · 06/09/2011 21:17

shall definitely be teaching dd2 to say 'ta' now, after reading this

Deesus · 06/09/2011 21:19

Over here pag! You know you belong in the corner with us!

bejeezus · 06/09/2011 21:19

skoooz me...can i get in the corner...ta

Olddough · 06/09/2011 21:19

I've never used baby talk - I hate anything non-specific. My dh refers to Cheesy Wotsits as 'crisps' and it drives me up the wall.

I also hate words like 'veggies' for vegetables and 'taties' for potatoes. And even more than that I hate my in-laws for referring to cutlery as 'eating-irons'.

usualsuspect · 06/09/2011 21:21

ta for the tinnie Deesus

Pagwatch · 06/09/2011 21:23

Excellent .

bejeezus · 06/09/2011 21:24

buuuuuuuurp!

lol at 'eating irons'

Deesus · 06/09/2011 21:24

Not a problem usual Grin Dig in ladies...there's enough for everyone. But anyone who pours it into a glass or raises their little finger is out of the corner Wink

issynoko · 06/09/2011 21:25

Olddough - do you hate 'placcy bags' too? I do.

usualsuspect · 06/09/2011 21:27

We say plaggy bags round these here parts
