stressed by any talk of potty

My ds (22 months) has been aware of doing a wee and poo for 3 months. We have talked about the potty for that time and he has successfully done both in the potty on a number of occasions, and has sat happily for up to 15 minutes.
We put him into pants 5 days ago and for the first couple of days he sat on the potty happily with varied success. However it has become harder and harder to get him to sit on it, even when we can see he is ready to go. He gets upset when he wets himself and when given the option of nappies or pants he always chooses nappies.
How to we re-persuade him to sit on the potty? Currently we have just backed off all talk o fthe potty and accepted there will be accidents, hoping that he just wants to take charge himself.

Sorry, meant to say that when given the option of pants or nappies he always choose pants!

He's ever so young to be potty training. It sounds from your post as if he's emotionally just not ready for it, and to be honest if he's asking for nappies then I'd put him back into nappies and try again much later.

Ah well, if he's asking for pants then that makes that part of my post redundant!

How does he feel about the toilet?

If it's stressing him, I wouldn't offer him the choice - I'd put him back into nappies for a little while and try again later. He's not 2 yet, he's got plenty of time, and it's not worth upsetting or stressing him out over.

He has sat on the toilet a couple of times quite happily (has 3.5yrs brother to watch), but never done anything.

Sounds like he likes the idea but is not ready really. My Ds was almost 3 when he was toilet-trained and it was really easy - 3 days and sorted.

I'd leave it for a while A friend of mine did her DS last Easter and he just wasn't ready and she regretted it afterwards.
