Oh god, DS is going to be one of THOSE children

You know, the ones who are up at the A and E every weekend with harrassed looking parents and a saucepan on their head.

He is only 19mths but seems to like sticking himself in tight spots or, sticking things in orifices.
He loves poking things in his ears. I have just caught him shoving grains of rice up his nose.
He keeps crying and rubbing his nose and then trying to shove a pea, or more rice up there.

I am going to have to pin him down and have a look up there with a torch aren't I

Yes I have one of those children too. You get less freaked out by their ways after the first few scares and somehow (ds is now 18 months) I think they get a bit more savvy. Mine used to climb up on a high chair then freefall onto the wood floor, his legs were bruised in most places, he used to do this on a daily basis. He would also headbang the patio or the outside wall, he has such a pretty face which is peppered with scar upon scar(!) He still loves spinning round so fast he usually end up in a plant pot head first. He loved shoving things up hise nose and once got some fruit wedged pretty tight.

I think his personal best was getting his head stuck in the park's metal fence, my usual reaction now is to tut and make sure I have liquid soap and arnica in my handbag.
Nobody comes to the park with us now.

do you think little boys are predisposed to being a bit nutty and getting into accidents?? My DS (20 months) climbs on EVERYTHING and dives off EVERYTHING. He has come down the stairs head first once, and his favourite game is wrestling with our labrador and trying to ride her. Oh yes, and climbing onto a 2.5ft stone wall in the garden and walking on the edge with a proud look on his face 'look mummy, no hands!' See you at the A&E...

Don't think it's just boys who fall over (dd is always in the wars and has had stitches in her head already ) but maybe they are moving faster and climbing a bit higher to start with so the injuries are worse. Ds1 is definitely heading for a regular casualty slot - we've had him there for swallowing a coin when he was 3. He also caused the most almighty ruckus when he called 999 as a toddler.

thank heavens for medical superglue, so much less traumatic for the little darlings than stiches. We have had several trips to A & E to be glued together again, I'll never forget the queens jubillee in 2002 and DS1 nose diving off a bouncy castle.......ahhhh the memories, the blood, the screams, the mass hysteria!

I find if you are going to A&E it is better not to clean the wound, leave as much blood as poss, people let you in front of them and you get seen quicker in my experience.

Not that I'm evil, just busy!

Thanks Spa, I dread the day I need to have my handbag searched!

my nephew got his head stuck in the open treads of the staircase!! Thought we would have to dismantle the whole thing to get him out.

Another nephew poured a whole tin of white paint over himself - completely covered head to toe! He was a regular attendee at A&E for YEARS with all kinds of impossible accidents. Now an apprentice electrician!

Apparently (!) I got stuck in the loo... You can imagine how many boyfriends have been told that story!

Tip for those whose kids shove things up their noses. Put your finger against the unblocked nostril to close it and then blow quite hard into the child's mouth; it may take several attempts but the object should shoot out.

When dd got something up her nose my GP refused to touch her and sent us to A & E. A & E then wanted to refer us to the ENT hospital

Ds2 had no fewer than 3 accidents in the space of 5 months when he was aged 16 months - 21 months. He broke his leg once and split his head open and had to have it glued together again twice! I was worried social services were going to become involved.

Fortunately that was then it for him. He went to A and E last year with a badly twisted knee but he needed no treatment and he is now nearly 8 so I think he was getting all his accidents over and done with in one go.

Ds1 has recently had his three accidents, breaking his arm twice (once very badly) and his nose once.

Only dd and ds3 to go now!

My point is, don't panic, being accident prone only seems to last a short time.

kitegirl · 05/12/2005 13:28

Wow, ItllBeLonely... phew, at least we have had no broken bones. yet. Mind you, last time we were at the A&E (ds banged his lip, blood everywhere again..) a very eager young female doctor looked at his attendance record and asked about how he got this scar and that scar and saying something how his injury is very difficult for small babies to inflict on themselves - I'm thinking 'oh hell, they are going to call the social services' ! Luckily we have not had to visit them for good 4 months. Here's hoping...
