they recommend once the baby can sit up to move it from the crib, but does this just mean if you want it to swing?if you lock the crib into a fixed position does the baby still need to be moved out when it is 6 months?

Yes, because a baby that can sit itself is just 'any day now' away from pulling itself up to standing, and could therefore topple out of a low-sided crib.

ah i see but couldn't the baby in the same way topple out of a cot?

no, the sides are too high - or should be. if not, it needs the base lowering.

A child can't topple out of a cot - as long as the base is at its lowest position - until they can climb out. When 6m+ baby pulls itself up to standing, the top of the cotside is usually about level with its neck. Most cots have 2 or more levels for the cotbase, the highest being suitable only for a baby under about 6m, who cannot sit up yet.

Which is one reason why we chose bedside cots for our two, as the sides move with the base, so the base can be left at its highest level even once the child can stand up. We've never lowered the bases.
