DD was about 2 1/2 I think but we were lucky as she showed no signs of trying to climb out of the cot and was happy in it til then.
Hoping DS will be the same but already have suspicions he'll try climbing !

tweeni · 04/12/2005 15:23

whats the youngest anyone would recommend?

Ds was 3.5y, dd is nearly 3y and is still in her cot.

LIZS · 04/12/2005 15:51

My nephew was about one and they didn't get a full night's sleep for more than a year ! He'd never been a good sleeper though, was too young to persuade to stay put and was night trained by 2 so had to get them up to help him to the potty after which he got into their bed. I'm afraid I value my sleep too much so ds was 2 1/4 and dd about the same when we removed cot side and got proper bed at 3.

tweeni · 04/12/2005 16:04

well my problem is i'm going to get a swinging crib for my first and everyone keeps telling me to not bother buying a cot but baby can't go straight from swinging crib to bed as will only 6 months max. might try and borrow one as LO may be out of it in no time. apparently i was in a bed by 9 months, went straight from moses basket to bed as i was 9 weeks prem so was small and i didn't move around to much.or so my mum says!

Actually, don't bother buying the crib - buy a cot! You'll get much more use out of a cot than a crib. You can't predict how big the bayb will be, and so many people say that the baby had outgrown the crib within a couple of months.

tweeni · 05/12/2005 15:33

don't need to buy the crib its a family heirloom - i had it passed to me when i was a baby, its been round a few others and now its back to our house again.

23 months

colditz · 05/12/2005 15:36

get a cot, honestly, because if that baby grows out of that crib at 4 months old, what are you going to do then? Unless you are intending to have the baby sleep with you until at least 15 months old, you are going to need a cot.

snowfalls · 05/12/2005 15:39

I moved all my kids into beds as soon as they could get on and off my bed by themselves, they were all 19 months.

merrymarchhare · 05/12/2005 15:40

DS is 24mos and still loving his cot. Why dot you try a cot-bed? DS has a cot-bed so when he's ready for a bed we will take the sides off and hopefully this will be OK until hes around 5/6.

tweeni · 05/12/2005 16:34

i know i will need a cot for the time between when the baby grows out of the crib and is old enough to go into a bed but i am going to try and borrow one. i am going to move him/her into a bed at about 9 months if that suits the baby (hopefully it will!) i think cos my cousin broke his arm whilst climbing out the cot at this age.whats the youngest anyone has known of a baby move into a bed?

OP posts:
LIZS · 05/12/2005 16:46

Occasionally they do climb early but the vast majority can't or don't until much older. Ikea do really inexpensive cots in case you can't borrow one for as long as you need it, or get a cot bed as mentioned before, so you can remove the sides and lower it to make a first bed as and when you and your baby are ready.

Also I suspect younger baies/toddlers are actually more at risk of falling out in a bed , particularly if it has a guard, as they may still try to pull themselves up but the height of the guard/bed end is so much lower than a cot that they could tumble over. Hard to explain to an under one that they shouldn't do it.

kitegirl · 05/12/2005 18:32

Hi, ds (20m) was in a crib first and then moved into a cot bed, it's big enough to go as long as we need and then converts into a big bed. A friend of mine moved her son into a big bed when he was 1 and a bit, and hasn't had a full night's sleep since. Her son sleeps ok on holiday in a travel cot, so maybe they need to be enclosed when they are little still for a sense of security?

pucca · 05/12/2005 18:36

About 14 months.

santabops · 05/12/2005 18:50

ds still in cot and has never tried to climb out of his cot.

Thinking I might move him into a bed after christmas - he will be 26 months old by then.

I have cot bed and would highly recommend one - has been great.

JingleShells · 05/12/2005 19:03

DD has just gone into a bed, she's just turned 2.
Good thing about having them in a cot and not a bed at an early age - dd has always tended to wake up v.early and knowing she is safely 'locked' away in her cot so to speak rather than up out of the bed and getting upto god knows what in her room, until I go into her gave me peace of mind.

Looking to invest in a cot-bed for new baby this time, as seems better value for money than buying cot, then bed.

kleist · 05/12/2005 19:19

Unless you're wealthy IMO I wouldn't bother with the swinging crib as I can't imagine an average 6-month-old could go straight into a bed. Plus I'd imagine they might grow too accustomed to the swinging motion as a means of getting to sleep.

My dd is 3 and 2 months and is STILL in her cot. She doesn't want to go into a bed. She's quite small and has plenty of room so I've never really seen the point. But I'm going to start forcing the issue I think after Christmas.

My family are horrified that dd's still in a cot. But I don't see the problem particularly ...

Tweeni - how are you getting on? Have you told your parents about your pregnancy yet? How are they taking it? I guess they are supportive if they are helping you get ready for the baby.

Did you decide to tell your partner about the baby? How did that go?

What car seat did you decide to get for your ( parenst i assume) car? Sorry if its your own car - I asumed it was your parents as not many 17 years olds drive a Renault Scenic.

What did you decide to do about school? Are you going back after the baby is born? You said you were worried they would throw you out because it was a private school - I hope they have been helpful.

I knwo you were asking about hair dye and maternity clothes and breast pumps and formula as well. You obviously have lots of things you are worried about at the moment.Do you have a friend in Rl you can talk to about these things?

Marneychristmas · 05/12/2005 19:50

16 months i think, she would'nt sleep in her cot so we tried the bed and she loved it.
