When do they stop having the second (morning) nap?

DS is 12.5mths. Until this week he would have an hour nap in the morning from 9-10 and one in the afternoon from 1-2. He wakes at 6.30 and goes to bed at 7pm.

This week he has fought the nap all the way. Even when he has gone to sleep, it's only been for 1/2hour.

Yesterday, I tried missing it. He was fine until 11.30 then very tired. I took him up and he went straight down for 1.5hours. Problem was he was then shattered by 7pm and difficult to go down.

So, what I'm asking is; Is he at the right age to drop the first nap? If so, is there a difficult transition period were I should keep trying to push the other nap further into the afternoon?

I'm not sure if I'm approaching it right by just dropping this one or if he's too young. Any advice appreciated.
BTW, he took quite a growth spurt recently and is now eating more too! (not sure if there's a connection)

My DS is 17m and still has 2 naps a day - Occasionally its only 1 nap if we're busy and he doesn't get the chance for the usual naps at usual times.
I have sometimes thought about cutting it back to one per day but the problem is he still only has a shortish one which isn't enough and we end up with a grump by teatime.
I've decided to just play it by ear really and I'm sure the time will come when he will tell me when he doesn't want the morning nap.

Thanks Hornbag, I was thinking he was a little young but the usual tired clues seem not to have been there this week so I'm not sure.
Just don't want him to be overtired because I haven't perservered enough.

homemama - dd is 13 months and still seems to want her 2 naps - sometimes she won't go down in the morning but then she has 2hours at lunchtime (12.30) which is not enough to get her to bedtime.
I have decided that I will go with the flow with her and see how we get on over the next couple of months - but I am happy to stick with 2 for now!

they do vary, homemama, so you'll jsut have to go with your gut instinct! Ds1 dropped his morning nap around 16 months, ds2 at around 10 months. It might take a little while to sort out the new routine and the single nap may be rather earlier than you are used to - ds2 used to fall asleep at 11.45 on the dot!

my dd went to 1 nap at around 11 months. She started by having a longer morning nap and then refusing to take her afternoon nap, resulting in an overtired monster!! I did try to gradually push her morning nap later and later but tbh it was easier to just make her wait and she would go for her nap around 11:15/11.30 am - sometimes it was for 1hour (not enough!) but most other times it was for 2.5hours. On days she had a worse nap she would have an earlier bedtime which seemed to even things out a bit. I think it is quite early for dropping a nap but it worked out ok for us.

My dd is only 9 months but is starting to give or take the morning nap. Some days if she doesn't sleep in the morning, I'll put her down for a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. She's much happier for the rest of the day when she has the longer nap rather than 2 short ones. hth

Mine dropped her morning nap at precisely 12 months because that was when she started at the childminders and her sleep didn't fit in with the CM routine.
There was a bit of a transition period of about a month when she napped earlier and longer in the afternoon, but it was quite smooth as she was almost ready to do it.

She is now 18 months and showing signs of wanting to drop the afternoon nap, which I think is earlier than other toddlers.

They are all different basically and there is no right age - just follow his lead as much as you can.

baba was 10 mths old wheni stopped the 2nd naps as the reason why cos she wakes up at 7.30am and she is not tired till 12 -1pm!?!, have 2 hours sleep, awake for 4 hours and another sleep for another 2 hrs....??

so i changed it all and she is alot happier now... she is awake at 7.30 after having 11/12 hrs sleep till 11.30 - 12, have 2 hours sleep and then she be awake till 8 (she is one of them babies that dont sleep during the day) but she is alot happier

My ds2 is 17 months and still naps twice a day. We did try doing only one after lunch, but he did not like this and would be too tired at bed time. He has one in the morning anytime really and then another in the afternoon.

My ds1 was not like this. He went to one nap around 1 year old and had a really long nap after lunch only.

homemama · 01/12/2005 13:01

Thanks everyone. It seems to vary so I'll see how it goes.
He went down at 11.20 and is still asleep so I guess we'll see.
