Moltex Oko Eco Disposables - best I've tried

Chantal gives Moltex Oko the "Bottoms up!". Having failed with cloth nappies and felt really guilty about using disposables, then came across Moltex Oko. They are better for the environment (unbleached, unperfumed and biodegradable)and my daughter doesn't get a nappy rash in them. I'm going to try letting the worms munch them up in a worm composter after Xmas(should be fun!). Best Moltex prices at the moment are at spirit of nature - they've got samples too!
Would be nice to think there are more of us who care about the planet - does anyone else love Moltex Oko?

Welcome to Mumsnet Roxi. Do you work for Spirit of Nature then?

They are good nappies, I use them when we can't use cloth.

They aren't biodegradable though, not unless you have an 8x4 ft wormery in your garden to put them in. If they're going in a landfill they are no better than any other nappy.

I loved the idea of these too, and used them when ds was really tiny. But they contain the same gels that regular disposables do, and so do not "break down" as they claim. Months and months after putting them into a wormery there will STILL be plastic residue etc. Disappointing I know. I have no idea if any other brands are truly compostable.

That's interesting ? do they advertise themselves as being biodegradable when they're actually not?

I've heard Tushies are gel free but haven't tried them, I think the only ones that are totally biodegradable are weenee pads and they have a reusable wrap

What about Nature Boy & Girl (from Sainsbury's) - does anyone know if these are better for the environment? Can't work out from what's on their website

Pennies · 30/11/2005 11:51

Tushies don't have the gel but are about as absorbant as a concrete block - not great fun for anyone.

I use Bambo ones because what I didn't like about Moltex was that I couldn't tell the colour of the wee and when DD was ill I wanted to be sure she asn't getting dehydrated. Bambo are oxygen bleached which apparently is better than normal. They are also biodgradeable but I'm not sure exactly how biedegradeable they are IYKWIM.

I and friends have found that Moltex are a bit rubbish in the small sizes (mini and midi) - they don't do up very well and leak easily. We're not at that stage yet, but a friend with a 1yo says the bigger sizes are much better.

fuzzywuzzy · 30/11/2005 12:15

Moltex packaging is bio-degradeable not the actual nappies and that's all they claim to be.
