We are getting through too many nappies!!

My dt's have a good balanced diet, but what can I do to slow their bowels down? They poo 5 or 6 times a day, every day!

Bananas.

rice, dried apricots.
But given what a nightmare constipation is, I would consider myself lucky

QueenEagle · 28/11/2005 14:53

Couple of corks?

smellymelly · 28/11/2005 19:55

Thanks QE!!!!

Fredly - I know a child who used to have constipation, and I understand how horrible it is. But changing up to 12 pooey nappies a day, is quite time consuming!!

We have bought some bananas today, and I will give them rice a little more often. And I will get some apricots too!

Thanks, anything else?

bit of gaviscon?

smellymelly · 29/11/2005 12:21

Gaviscon, really?

well Gaviscon (Infant Gaviscon of course) slowed down ds's bowels when he was taking it for reflux. I wouldn't give them too much though, they made ds slightly constipated, but he was taking it with every feed. Maybe just one sachet a day might make a difference?

spidermama · 29/11/2005 19:50

What's the consistency of the poos like? The reason I ask is because my ds1 used to be a six-poo-a-day baby. (Sloppy mucousy poos) We later, years later, discovered he has a wheat and dairy intolerance. We've adjusted his diet and he is so much better in so many ways. He now poos once a day.

Bozza · 29/11/2005 20:05

I thought apricots would have the other effect.

spidermama · 29/11/2005 20:05

Yup. Me too.

smellymelly · 30/11/2005 08:50

Their poos are generally of 'good' consistency (!), although incredibally stinky sometimes.

Ds1 was strictly once a day. but dd1 was also 6 times a day, and she was referred to a specialist with a few issues, one being toddler diarrehea ( spelling) as I don't think her bowels ever learned to slow down. A little better now, she is 3.

I am worried this is going to happen to both the twins, and it is a nightmare with toilet training.

Yes Bozza & Spidermama, was going to say the same thing about dried apricots. IME definitely do not have a constipating effect! Haven't given them to ds yet as I am worried about what might happen

spidermama · 30/11/2005 23:57

You could take them to a naturopath smellymelly. They're good at this sort of thing. Doctors are really crap about dietary issues IME. They barely get any training in this area.

Thanks, we have just tried Bananas so far. I do not want to go down the gaviscon route, and thanks for clearing up the apricots issue, so that means I don't have to... clear it up!!

The bananas may have helped a little, although dd2 is not very keen. Also have held off giving them loads of veg twice a day for a while. Just give them a little now.
