When your child almost has a serious accident

Today my three y.o. ran into the road and narrowly missed being knocked over. I yelled his name and he luckily turned around. If he hadn't - just a step closer and thing would be very different for us tonight.

I just can't get it out of my head. I'm totally berating myself, which I suppose is right because it's natures way of making you more vigilant in the future.

But right now I feel just terrible, thinking of what could have been. Half of me thinks I deserve to feel this bad for letting go of his hand for that moment, half of me thinks it just happens like that sometimes because some kids are hell bent on damaging themselves through not listening.

I know this is a daft post, but I just need some kind words. Also, how have you recovered from a time when your child has come close to seriously hurting themselves?

Thanks

when we were little I was about 9 my dad had business in londom so we went down for day with him on way back all in train at paddingtion and while sitting down my little sister just got off the train again found by guard on platform she did it in about 10 seconds as she was definitely on train, my mother and father were mortified, angry with her she must have been 5 ish and of course relieved

apparently i let myself out of house one sunday morning moring when I was about 2 and was walking along the dotted line in middle of road until neighbour across road spotted me apparently it was the first time I had opened door get Wine and don't beat yourself up you noticed and acted in time and DS stopped when you said so congratulate yourself you have taught him to listen when it really matters

My MiL put black out blinds up in DS room when he was a baby - about 6 months. She then left some curtain hooks in his cot which I totally missed when I put him to bed. I only saw them in the morning. I still frighten myself thinking what might have happened if he'd swallowed one.

Most of the near-miss incidents described on here happened at least once to me or to one of DC, during toddler years.

One reason I will keep DC4 in the buggy until as late as possible is his appalling lack of road sense (which he can't even muster for quiet roads, never mind the busy ones we need to walk on).

The only time I've had to take a DC to A&E was when one stuck a bead up her own nose (sigh).

my son was hit by a car on 5th Feb this year. he had broken both bones in legt leg above ankle, broken clavicle, fracture to left arm below shoulder and 2 fractures in his pevis. He is doing great, both mentally and physically. Me however I cannot get over it- flash backs of seeing seeing him on the road and injuries at the roadside and the anger I cannot get rid of no matter what I try. I know I am so lucky that he he is still with us- they said of he had been an inch shorter we would be having a very different conversation.
