how old to have a bunk bed?

12 year old desperate to pass on her bunk to younger sibling, 6 years, 8 months old. Younger one clambers up and down quite happily of course so I can't really foresee any problem. Just wondered about anyone else's views, experiences though.

My 6 yr old is fine on the top. 4 yr old is underneath and can also clamber safely.

My dd went into the top bunk at 4.4 yrs with her 2 yr old sister underneath. No problems at all, just made sure we bought bunks with a decent sturdy ril guard.

rail guard obviously!

Same as Rosie, my dds 4 and 2 are in bunk beds. Dd2 is under strict instructions not to climb to the top though and surprisingly she hasn't yet.

If only she did as she was told the rest of the time Wink

DD had a bunk bed when she was nearly 5 and was absolutely fine with it.

To prevent your little ones from climbing the ladder to the top bunk check out this ladder barrier at www.toddlelock.com.

The childrens bedroom wouldn't fit two singles so I had no choice but to get a bunkbed, my youngest has just turned two and can climb the ladder, my eldest is 5 he can clamber up and down whilst my middle son is 3 but refuses to go up. I am teaching them that the bunkbeds are not for playing on. Thankfully my kids are well behaved and I don't have problems such as jumping or eating on furnishings, but that's down to my military other half. They'd probably be jumping off the top bunk if he weren't around...

My DS had high sleeper from 4.5 when DD moved underneath him. Was fine with it. - my nephew managed to fall out of one at about that age - slipped though the gap in the railings where the ladder comes up. He was a small 4 year old though - would be fine by 6 I think (and he was completely unhurt anyway)

Just keep the pillow at the far end from the ladder, so the gap in the railings is not so near to where they're sleeping
