Being potty training for the last two days with much better results than the first time we tried. DS has only had 2 accidents today, but we need to take him to the potty every 45 minutes, he won't go to it by himself, but I supose that would improve as the week goes by.

The question is, will he need to wee every forty-five minutes once he's out of nappies? if not, how often do they go to the toilett at this age?

Please some body tell me is not going to be like this!!!! ARGHHHH!!!!!!!!

Once he gets used to holding on, he'll be able to go longer between wees. My ds is 2.5 and manages 1.5 - 2 hrs between wees. One thing I found helpful in the early potty training days, was for him not to have a drink constantly on the go. Just at mealtimes, and offered occasionally in between!!

It will get better! Good luck!

Thanks

I really don't know if this is a good idea or not, the main purpose of potty training at this time is that we are going to visit my family after Chrismas and as most babies are potty trained by 2 yrs at the other side of the Atlantic, I really struggled to find suitable nappies when we were there a year ago. We are going for three weeks so I can't really take enough nappies with me, but I can't imagine either how I could take it to the toilet so often while travelling, if just to get to the airport takes us almost 2 hours...

My ds was like that at first and some days still is. I think it is the novelty of it tbh and it will wear off.

When he's engrossed in something else he can go up to about 2 hours without going.

how old is he Nutcracker?, just calculating how long it would be before he can hold it in for 2 hrs.

He is now 2.11 Chandra. Has been trained since he was 2.8.

Chandra - I think it takes a while IIRC

I used to take mine to the toilet every 30mins or so!

I would not rely on them to tell you they need to go until a few weeks into training. Until then I used to always take them, whether they said they needed to go or not!

Big fuss made if they did

Two accidents in one day is pretty good going at this stage

chandra my ds2 has been dry since age 2 (! his idea not mine) he is now 2.6 and can certainly manager a good 1-1.5 hrs. 2hrs might be pushing it TBH unless he hasn't had a drink for a while.
You might have to stop en route to the airport!
For example I left him at youth group in church this am (1hr 15 mins) and would have expected him to need a wee in that time.
But you will find it gets better....

Chandra - where in the US were you? Our experience was very different with most parents not potty training until around 3YO there. We have never had difficulty in getting nappies when we have been there (although DS was only in nappies at night time) - the nappies went to very large sizes!!!!

Is there a wal mart near where you are - we bought nappies there!

My DD goes for hours and hours sometimes. I have to remember to get her to go or she holds on to it too much IMO.

It took a while to potty train but i started by getting her to sit on the potty every time i went to the toilet. Eventually she started using the toilet instead of her nappy. She is dry all day now but still in nappies and wet at night. We never made a big issue of it though (much to the disgust of some people who apparently start their potty training at 6mths).

There was a Mumsnetter (IIRC) who gave their child gallons of juice so that they could feel it in their bladder properly and then go to the loo. Once they know what it feels like then it is much easier. In a way it is better for them to feel the wee down the leg so that they know what has happened IYSWIM.

Thanks for your answers, we have completed the day with just one accident! (hurray!!!), no poo whatsoever since yesterday, though, guess he is holding in because he doesn't want to use the potty...(children! last time we tried potty training he was perfectly OK with poo but not with wees [puzzled emoticon])

Good to hear he could go up to every 2 hrs, today somebody told me that she started potty training at DS age and after two months the girl is going every 3 hrs, so, as long as it is not every 40 minuts, it's OK

Soapbox, I was in Texas, I found nappies big enough for DS to wear but they were not good enough to survive the night without leaks (tried everybrand in the market sold by from Walmart to Walgreens) so if you know of a particularly good brand for a 15 kg child, please (PLEASE!!![begging emoticon]) let me know.

Sorry, what is IIRC? I think the gallons of juice sounds like a particularly good idea (provided I could manage to make him drink juice), how well did it work?

Thanks again for your replies
