Good morning everyone,
My name is Sian and I am new to mumsnet. I have joined in the hopes of finding some advice regarding brands. I am 25 weeks pregnant with my first baby, who is also the first baby in our family since I was born and also the first baby in my circle of friends, so I have nobody to ask for advice!

I am wanting to start shopping for nappies, wipes and toiletries for my baby, but I don't know which brands to buy.

Could you advise me please on your preferred brand on disposable nappies, wipes, shampoo, body wash etc for a newborn baby.

Many thanks

x Sian x

Just buy supermarket own brands for nappies and wipes. Make sure you buy unperfumed wipes, or consider washable ones. You don't need lots of baby toiletries as it is best to just use water to start with. You could get some baby shampoo or all in one wash if you like but it really is best to avoid Johnson's as it is very highly perfumed. Go for something unperfumed and preferably without SLS. Just get a very small bottle as you only need the tiniest amount. Most shops will have a shelf selling more 'natural' products. Don't get baby powder. You could buy a small tub of Sudocrem, or a tube of Bepanthen or Metanium to use if the baby gets nappy rash. Then again a lot of people swear by camomile tea on the baby's bum for nappy rash.

If your baby has very dry skin you can use a drop of olive oil.
Don't stock up on lots of nappies in one size as you might find your baby outgrows them before you have used them up and you might want to try a few different brands.

Don't buy things like Pampers and Johnson's because they really are not any better. In fact I would say they are not as good.

If you are planning to breastfeed it would be a good idea to buy a tube of Lansinoh, but only get one as a tube will last a long time.

If you havent already sign up for the Boots Baby Club and see if whichever supermarket you shop in does something similar. Tescos do but not sure about the others. Also register for Bounty packs and if you want to try more natural products look for a local supplier of the Mama Pack. This way you will get free samples and money off vouchers and can try a few or get the branded stuff cheaper.

Cloth nappies and wipes are very popular on here. If you have thought about those am sure you would get lots of advice ;)
