If a child has never had shampoo on their hair, how much does it matter if they do, just once?!

We stayed with friends at the weekend. Our parenting methods and views are broadly similar and we had a lovely weekend.

We did make one mistake though. DH bathed all four DC together Smile Our friends are more "natural" in their approach than we are and r DC (4 & 6) have never had shampoo on their hair, their parents prefering to let the natural oils do their job. Not realising it wasn't what everyone does, DH washed all the heads with lots of suds!

How much does it matter/will anyone notice?

Um, I think they'd be weird if they were upset by a bit of soap.

It does not matter.

bruxeur · 22/05/2011 19:27

Oh god they will MELT. You must phone them immediately, they're going to need a metric shitload of crystals and dreamcatchers to sort this one out.

AnnieLobeseder · 22/05/2011 19:29
Hmm

If they don't use shampoo, fair dos.

But they'd be barking to get upset by your DH doing so, since it's what most people do, if they didn't ask him not to.

It won't make any difference. The parents might wonder why they smell so lovely.

Do they parents know? Surely they aren't going to be cross over a simple, innocent mistake. A very easy one to make after all. I'd have assumed shampoo for all unless specifically told otherwise.

TrillianAstra · 22/05/2011 19:48

Since they are the ones doing something unusual, they should have said 'no shampoo' if they knew the children were going ot have a bath. The same way that if you are raising your child vegan and someone is going to feed them, it's wise to let them know.

Oh, this has cheered me up. Please tell me that you introduced their DD to Barbie as well.

Hassled · 22/05/2011 19:54

Barbie and some toy guns. And maybe some Skittles. Please tell me you gave them Skittles.

SummerRain · 22/05/2011 20:04

I rarely use shampoo on the kids but on the odd occasion when I do it doesn't do any harm.

dd and ds2 have hair long enough to notice if it dried it out or dulled it and it never has.

BTW... I constantly get comments on how lovely the kids' hair is from people so the no shampoo thing does seem to have an effect.

Chaotica · 22/05/2011 20:11

We hardly ever use shampoo, but once in a while is probably no bad thing. (Natural oils can't get food out!)

When are you going again? (That is, if their hair hasn't fallen out Hmm and assuming you do get invited back.)

Can we help you make a list of things to pack?
Barbie and all her accessories
Guns
Froot shoots
Katie Price pony stories

Brevity · 22/05/2011 20:20

bruxeur am crying with laughing at crystals and dreamcatchers!

MirandaGoshawk · 22/05/2011 20:21

Coco pops and Golden nuggets. Those poor deprived kiddies will love 'em!

i don't use shampoo on my kids' hair (4 and 2). thought it was quite normal tbh? i do put bubble bath in the bath now, although ex doesn't. so at least some of the time, they are bathed just in water.

MirandaGoshawk · 22/05/2011 21:04

I'm sorry to take the piss. Good for you for doing what you believe is good for the dch/planet.

Just one thing - won't their dch tell their parents? "But bathtime was soooo much fun when create came to stay - all those bubbles!" (Or "Create's DH put horrid soap in my eyes when he washed my hair!" Hmm )

trixymalixy · 22/05/2011 21:08

I don't normally use shampoo on DD or DS' hair and they both have lovely hair.

I have used it occasionally if particularly dirty I have used shampoo and it hasn't looked any different.

SummerRain · 22/05/2011 21:08

I'm no hippy either... my kids have Barbies and toy guns and eat skittles and even drink Coca Cola when offered it Shock

I just got into the habit of it when dd was sharing with the boys when they were tiny and I didn't use soap on them and her hair looked so lovely I just never went back to shampoo after ds2

trixymalixy · 22/05/2011 21:14

Me too summerrain, definitely not hippyish. I never use shampoo as both of mine have eczema.

poorbuthappy · 22/05/2011 21:15

How do you get the food out of the hair without shampoo?

WishIWasRimaHorton · 22/05/2011 21:17

with the water. and my hands.

SummerRain · 22/05/2011 21:23

I'm lucky that dd and ds2 both hav very slinky hair, despite having a slight wave so once it gets wet any muck just runs right out.

I freely admit if they had masses of curls it probably wouldn't be doable as you'd need shampoo to dislodge all the food and dirt properly.

Trixy... dp has severe eczema and as babies all three of mine reacted to any soaps in the bathwater so I just got into the habit of not using them when they were tiny

CancerMadeMeUnfit · 22/05/2011 21:23

I didn't use shampoo on my boys until their hair got full of crap. Water got out the food, no problem. But when I was still shampooing it only every now and then it didn't instantly give them itchy, scaly scalp with hives from the bubbles ;). It should be fine, honestly.

mathanxiety · 23/05/2011 00:05

What's wrong with taking food out of their hair immediately after eating? Are there people who leave their DCs all day with food in their hair? I usually hosed them down after meals, and even the curliest had to submit to a wet washcloth until I got the food out. I didn't do a daily bath though and the curly haired DCs don't ever use shampoo, only conditioner.

I think the no poo DCs will survive. It takes only a few days for the natural oils to adjust after shampooing.
