Super-absorbent night reusable for horse/toddler

I am sick of disposables. DS is getting sodden at night, and the gel bits come out on his skin, and I wish I'd bought cloth from the beginning. However, it's never too late to start! But what to choose for night time...

DS is 17 months, and big (98th for height & weight). He loves drinking his bath water and will not stop doing it (even when we take containers away, he just puts his face down and guzzles), followed by a breastfeed before bed, so within hours he's done ginormous horse-wees and filled the nappy. We're currently dream-changing about three hours after he goes to bed, although he's often wet before that (last night wet through to Grobag within 90mins of bed time), and he can then usually stay dry from the change 'til morning.

I think it'll need to be an all-in-one, as if we have to carry on with the dream-changes, wraps might be too much of a disturbance. Are all-in-one nappies less absorbent/reliable? I've looked at the review section on here, but not sure what are all-in-ones and which require wraps or whatever. And he's big, of course, so that might have a bearing on which brands to try?

Any thoughts, recommendations gratefully received!

All in ones are normally the best choice for nightimes because they arent as absorbent and having two-parters gives you extra leak protection.

The Tots Bots Stretchies are goog absorbent night choices, maybe with an extra micrifibre booster on top to soak up the mammoth wees really quickly (a Flip stay dry insert for example) and then a waterproof wrap over top.

I would go for a large pocket nappy, with a big pocket that you can stuff full of boosters. Put a microfibre booster on top to quickly draw the liquid in and underneath use bamboo or even better, hemp to absorb lots.

I would say try a fuzzi bunz, wonderoo V1 (if they still sell them?) or a greenkids pocket nappy and stuff, stuff, stuff!

Pocket nappies didnt work for my horse weer DD2 at night, she just wet thru them even with extra boosters lol. I found the best nappy for night time was a bedbug and a motherease wrap. These are expensive nappies but well worth the cash. Your LO is a bit older so if you dont want to shell out a lot i also found tots bots a good alternative but ensure you use a good wrap such as motherease and boost with extra bamboo. Good luck

Before I invested in proper night nappies I used to use 2 bamboozles (one on top of the other) and a fleece/wool/PUL wrap on the top. He used to be a humungous wee'er due to the massive volume of milk he took in overnight and this combo lasted brilliantly.

im off the pocket night stuffing breed, wonderoos and greenkids i found had the biggest pockets and i too used to stuff em to the max. Fleece pockets are good too as some evaporates or soem such magic through the night but i used to find they smelt like a hamster cage on a morning.

louloubelle · 19/05/2011 16:24

Might I suggest you give him a shower instead of a bath for a few days to try to break the water guzzling habit...or even a bath in the morning? Not a help on the nappy front I know....

SkyNewsAddict · 19/05/2011 20:51

PMSL @ hamster cage itsnice. I know exactly what you mean!

Cumbrianlass2 · 22/05/2011 17:18

For what you are describing, your DS sounds like mine and tbh none of my pockets did the trick. A mega boosted Slinki Minki might but they would look like a weeble. Holdens Landing Bedbugs / Bedbugs Plus or bamboo Wee Notions Night Notions with a motherease wrap are our reliable night nappies. Little Gumnut do nice nappies too and Ems will ask you to weigh nappies before and after wear to make sure absorbancy is right lol

I had the same problem when dd was about 17 months. Shes 19 months now. Thankfully at that time bumgenius had a brilliant offer on (£5.55 per nappy) so we got some of those. I have found these to be perfect. As we could only buy 5 with this offer we have to use the odd disposable at night if they are not dry enough. Almost every morning with the disposables we have to change everything (grobag, sheets, pillow!) as she is so wet but not with the bumgenius. I'm was so shocked at how great they were. I use fuzzi's and flips during the day but they are nowhere near as good for night time. They have brought out a new nappy so I dont think getting hold of the old ones should be too expensive.

But as they others have said it might be wise to stop him drinking so close to bed time.

virginiasmonalogue · 23/05/2011 10:16

I second bumgenius. I like the pockets with the organic flip inners as inserts.

Or

Tots bots stretchies with a bamboo insert or 2 with a BG flip cover

Or

Weenotions night notions with a BG flip cover

I have a mammoth horse toddler. I use disposables, but at nighttime I put in a disposable nappy pad (Mothercare are the only place that sell them as far as I can see). The pads are £3.49 for 25, they look like giant maternity pads.

From wetting through to the grobag EVERY SINGLE night, to being dry - though the nappy and pad are wet, it's been a brilliant method.

I did consider the reusable option, but I didn't fancy all the washing. However we do save on nappies, as now we use one nappy each night (lasts between 12 -14 hours) with one pad. During the daytime, there are more frequent changes.
