What's Changed??

I've also posted this in "Sleep" but it occurred to me that it's not only the sleeping patterns that have changed!

Help! My DS is 4.5 months and since about 12 weeks has been sleeping 7 until 7 (quite often until closer to 8) and having a 2 hour nap in the morning and 2 hours over lunchtime. This all seems to have changed this week and I'm not sure why!

He is waking at 5.30am, not sleeping in his nap times at all (he lies in his cot chatting and more often that not moaning to himself) and is very grizzly during the day which is unlike him. I think this could be where he is tried from not sleeping properly during naps??

Feeding has also been a nightmare for the past couple of weeks as he gets so upset when I try to give him his bottle, pushes it out of his mouth with his tongue or his fists and now closes his mouth to stop me putting it back in. He is also much more sicky than he has ever been.

Could it be teeth? Any other suggestions or advice would be much appreciated!

It is also worth getting his ears checked for an ear infection - if he's not wanting to suck then it may because his ears hurt, and if he's starving hungry then that's probably why he's not sleeping properly.

definitely take on board the fact that they do change - usually just when you get lulled into a false sense of security they decide to throw it all us in the air and start again. If he is not sleepy at the time of his morning nap, move it a bit later or try and do something really active / fresh air to tire him out. At 4.5 months you COULD maybe look at crushing up a rusk in milk and see if he fancies that alongside his bottle. Just keep an open mind and be as flexible as you can - he will do this again , and again...

I agree with the above. There's also a big developmental spurt at around 19 weeks (from the due date) which causes the 4 month sleep regression and can affect feeding too. More info here, here, here and here.

The early waking is probably due to overtiredness from not napping. Most babies this age need 3 naps a day, usually after 1.5-3 hours of being awake (usually this awake time is shortest in the morning and later in the afternoon).

My DD is exactly the same (she is 4.5mo) I have read up a lot about it and think the sleep issues are 4 month sleep regression. Not sure when it will end, but hopefully soon, I'm exhausted.

The feeding issue is quite common at this age I think because a few mums of babies of similar ages at a group we go to said that this has happened to them. Really don't know why. Some people would say they are ready for food I guess, but I really don't know. My DD doesn't appear to have any teeth coming through so don't think its that with her.

Sorry I haven't been much help but at least you're not alone.

Ah right angeldog didn't realise the developmental stuff would affect feeding too, makes sense.

Thank you all for the advice! I think I just need to be a bit more flexible and not expect things to stay the same.
