1st Birthday presents

Family are starting to ask me what they could buy for my DDs 1st B'day - I have no idea! She has all the clothes she needs for her current size, a million toys because kind friends keep giving her their kid's hand-me-downs.

The very practical side of me says I'd rather give them my DDs bank account details and they can put in whatever they want to in there for her future but that sounds a bit hard and money grabbing.

Any thoughts on asking for money or what she might need in the next year or so that they can buy her for her b'day?

I told ILs that money would be great - only one of them did it. I don't think it is unreasonable to ask though.

Or I would ask that they club together for good-quality wooden toys such as a wheelybug (fantastic toy) or ones of those wooden trucks that you push with bricks in (also great). Buggies are also brilliant once they are walking.

My DD got one of these gorgeous prams in the natural wood for her first birthday, and it is the best thing ever - and I can see her kids playing with it too which is really nice.

Is the wheelybug the ladybird thing? We saw that in John Lewis and my Mum commented that she wants to buy that for her so that's one gift sorted!

Think I just need to have a big clear out of her 0-12 month toys before we get the next lot, house is already over-flowing!

Mine both got the next size car seat as it cost over £100. DS doesn't sit in his, his older sister does! He has her old one!!!!
They have so many toys.
You could try the line
Money so that I can spread type of toys according to her abilities as she grows over the next year.

We bought our DD a wheelybug for Xmas (she was 14 months then) if you get one get the big one not the smaller one as she has nearly out grown it. For her 1st birthday we bought a push a long bike, that has a parent handle and eventually turns in to a trike, she loves it! Other suggestions, a swing for the garden, a small slide, I know you probably think she is too small but you will be surprised at how quickly she will be using them once she is walking.

If she's walking or cruising yet you could ask one of the grandparents to pay for her 1st pair of shoes?

Otherwise, things that can be added to over time like duplo, happyland stuff etc are a good bet.

Fisher Price Little People stuff or ELC Happyland, we bought DD1 the Ark and animals for her first birthday, she still plays with it age 6 and so does our 3 other DC.

Little Tikes car thing (cannot remember correct name), she may be a little small for it now but will grow into it.

Trike with parent handle.

We just bought DS a Bounce and Spin Zebra for his 1st birthday (it was half price at Christmas!) he's too small for it now but it will be ok in a few months.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 16/05/2011 07:33

1st pair of shoes is a fantastic idea!

I love that spinning zebra, have had my eye on that for a while.

My ever practical sister called last night to say she'd like to buy DDs birthday cake for her party which I thought was a great idea (little does she know I've ordered forty quids worth of cupcakes - oops!)

this book is lovely - lots of stories for very young ones, and lots for them go grow into. dd1 is 4 and still hasn't grown into them all, but loves the ones we do read.
