Are my ideas a bit old fashioned??

Aren't they a bit old for that? i think it would drift towards Playstation round here.

MmeBlueberry · 15/05/2011 10:58

Is it for boys or girls?

I think they are too old for games. You might get away with a craft or cooking with girls.

They would probably be happy to just play in the garden - football, cricket, playing with a hosepipe, wide games etc.

I agree with Cristina, I think they are too old for pass the parcel etc,

Maybe you could have a disco if its a girls party

How long is the party?

daytoday · 15/05/2011 11:06

No no no - not too old for games. Just call them different things! We played pass the parcel but called it 'pass the bomb' and had some of that popping candy in each section. Get loads of waterbombs and do aim and throw games if you have a garden. Making paper aeroplanes and racing them. I did it for some 10 year olds - along with a quick play station competition too and they loved it.

What about getting cheap white ceramic plates/mugs & ceramic pens.
My Dd had a sleepover and did this with her friends.
It went down very well and they had something to take home.

Decorating cupcakes.

Wii/platstation with just dance.

NorbertDentressangle · 15/05/2011 11:11

If you were planning on doing some sort of party bag/gift for guests to go home with, give them all a cheap water gun or water pistol at the beginning of the party instead.

I did a spy/treasure hunt type party with 8 year olds. I agree that 9 year olds will be ok with this with a bit of re-naming of games.

I've played pass the parcel with 11 year olds and they get so excited when there are still more layers of paper after 10 have already been ripped off. It's a hoot. And it's a very mixed bunch of kids.

As part of the spy party, we ha d a balloon pop. Very popular although one or two kids might find the noise unbearable. A clue was hidden inside one balloon. We'd blown up about 50 balloons and put them in the garage. They had to pop them to find the clue.

Where are you kangers? If in London there is a party shop in NW2 called 101 Parties (Dudden Hill Lane) which caters for all things parties. Also Fenwicks (Brent Cross) used to do them ... haven't seen them there for a while so don't know if they still do them.

Agree with water-type fun. Water pistols/super soakers etc. Don't know if it for boys or girls but both seem to enjoy getting soaked.

Pinatas available on line - I got my last one from party pieces (you'll be safe in the knowledge that your dosh will be contributing to Pippa Middleton's next wow outfit!)

I think a treasure hunt is a great idea! you could also have a rainy day contingency by holding an inside hunt where they follow a trail of clues (make sure you tell them where is out of bounds first!). In the past I have also done some "who is it" quiz sheets (just copy & paste pics from google images - I always include some footballers / celebrities / historical people and politicians. A good one to give to kids as they arrive, to keep them occupied.

I have also done quizzes around our village (it is very quiet, so may not work everywhere). I walk around the village and take pics of bits of houses or notable landmarks. i then turn it into a quiz - for example, what is the name of the house with this (inser pic of front door) door?, or how many steps up to the front door of the church? At that age you will need to have an adult either with them or tailing at a suitable distance, but it worked really well with my DD (she was 13!)

For food how about make your own pizzas? You can but mini pizza bases or even make your own dough.

almost wish I was planning a party now!

pointydog · 15/05/2011 12:46

Pizzas good. Cut toppings so that they can make them into criminals' faces. Sorta like pizza Wanted posters. SPy/treasure theme.
