Holidaying with cloth...

How do people cope being away overnight/holidaying with cloth? Particularly if you don't have a washing machine available!

I can't really get my head around it as DS is averaging a dozen changes a day. I know that will come down (or I hope it will) but it still seems impractical, especially as nappies are pretty bulky!

For one or two nights away, I've managed with wet bags for the dirty nappies and a lot of luggage (to accommodate all the nappies!). For longer trips, we've always stayed somewhere with a washing machine, so have just carried on washing every day or two as normal. I tend to take more microfibre nappies to dry faster with just a few bamboo or similar for nights and long car journeys.

If I were going away for more than a couple of days and with no washing machine, I think I would switch (reluctantly) to disposables, and maybe take a day or two's worth of washables for the last part of the holiday (luggage permitting).

When are you going away? Like you say, the number of nappies does drop as they get older. You could use a mix of cloth and disposables to make it easier for a bit?

DS will be 4 months when we go. It's for 3 weeks and we'll have a machine some of the time but there are some long trips - 10hoirs on the plane, a 4 hour train journey, another couple of train trips and possibly 5/6 hours in the car not counting breaks.

I'm reluctantly thinking disposables are easier.

Hmm, I think I'd be tempted to use disposables. Presumably you'll have restricted luggagge on the plane? We can almost fill a small suitcase with our nappies when we go away, but maybe that's just us (dd being a heavy wetter so lots of boosters as well..)

46kg per person with Air France. But it's still not huge amounts...

Disposables it is. Although ironically after a 10 hour flight I shouldn't be concerned with carbon footprints, nasty chemicals or any other kind of pollution!

Take disposables. The only time we use cloth when staying away is at either my parents or MILs house where we know we can wash and dry easily.
Oh and when we stayed at Bedruthan Steps, they have decent washing facilities that guests can use. But we still used disposables for the beach. Sand does not wash out of bamboo terry very well!!

frakyouveryverymuch · 15/05/2011 19:39

Sand likely to be more of a problem at home than away! But, in light of that information, when we take DS to the beach disposables might be a plan Wink

If the holiday place says it has washing machines it's worth checking how they are set up. We were unable to use the machines at our holiday location as the machines had washing liquid and fabric softner automatically fed into the machine, so we couldn't wash our nappies after all :( Two kids in washables and we had to do an emergency trip to Tesco for disposables.

Now found out I'm going on holiday myself in a few weeks and will need disposables! Anyone know any good brands for chunky legged babies with relatively slim waist? I have no ideas about brands or sizes....

peachybums · 17/05/2011 21:18

This was causing me headache too! I HATE disposables but DP said i would be walking home if i tried to put a weeks worth of nappies in the car on the 2-3 hour journey home!

Im going for a gel free or eco disposable type as DD2 never been in disposables before and i dont want her to react to anything.
