Anxiety over normal bumps and bruises

My 15 month old DS has in the past week started walking unaided. Yay, a key milestone reached, and I'm really proud of him.

He is prone to falling over, bumping himself, and generally he's fine within a few seconds. He's a bit like an inexperienced ice-skater, who can go in a straight line, but can't change direction or stop himself Grin

A few times though he's fallen and hit his head off the floor or whatever is nearby and has two big cuts and lumps on his forehead :( He is fine, was up and about after a few minutes, but I am a mess!

I want to get rolls of bubble-wrap and cotton wool, wrap him in it and just carry him everywhere forever to protect him.

Please can someone tell me he is totally normal and I'm being an over-anxious PFB.

How can I just relax and roll with the bumps?

You get used to it!

DS2 always has an array of interesting bumps and bruises on his forehead as he seems intent on headbutting everything and not using his hands to slow his speedy falls!

I make as little fuss as possible so he doesn't become a wimpy kid too - he picks himself up, dusts himself down and throws himself off another climbing frame/table/chair/slide/sofa, etc!

Just wait til he starts running Grin.

DS is 20 months and has been walking for 3 months now. He's always got bumps, scabs, bruises on his forehead- he bumps his head almost every day and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. They need to have little accidents in order to learn how not to hurt themselves. I'm sure there'll be many more people along soon to tell you this is all very normal!

I am the same and trying so hard not to overreact! DS is 8 months and standing and falling - I was trying so hard to do the "ooops a daisy" brush off (with a cuddle) and kind of let him figure it out for himself, but last week he managed to fall forwards and chip one of his teeth that he's only had for a couple of months Sad

I wish I could protect him and just have him sit on my lap while I softly stroke his beautiful perfect face.

But he isn't like this at all and loves pulling up on completely unsuitable things like the clothes horse or the dishwasher.

And my DH tells me it will only get worse and regales me with tales of falling off walls, headbutting swings, shooting arrows at his brother, biting goal posts and general childhood mayhem.

Poor ozziegirly! I'm always dreading DS breaking one of his teeth :(

DS is awake now and the golf-ball sized lump on his forehead has gone! The cut is still there, but lump not. I am so pleased.

It's only 8am now, so I'll have to await to see what hectic activities DS gets up to as the day progresses.

We're going on holiday next week, and I can only imagine him in the airport.... Noooo!

Wait 'til he starts climbing, TLC!

I know it's difficult but it's just part of learning to walk. Their heads are amazingly hard!

At this point my son is 24 months (Shock how did that happen?!?!) and he falls over, hits his head, laughs, gets up and runs away! You'll both get used to it!

TryLikingClarity · 13/05/2011 11:44

Tee- I can't believe your son is 24 months! I also can't believe that my son is 15 months! Time is flying, and where oh where have all the NI mums gone??

(random aside to the thread, I know)

Oops, he's actually 23 months! But still...

I know, where did they all go?!?!
