Hi, this is my first time on mumsnet, can't think why it has taken me so long. Could anyone give me some kind advice please? My one year old baby girl has been horribly constipated ever since weaning really, bar a few good patches, and her poos are hard and painful, and she has now got a little haemorroid - slightly horrified. What should I do? Have cut out bread and just bought some gluton free finger foods, and some Lactulose to try and loosen her stools, but is that enough? Should I somehow treat the pile? Or do you think it is time to get off the the GP? Thanks everyone!

aww poor little thing :(

I would see the gp as haemorrhoids can be so awfully painful at times (I have them Blush )

GP asap she may have a food intolerence that needs to be identified. Is she on the formula with extra iron ?

oooh dear. Off to the GP, I think.

oh gosh, thank you all. Seem to spend life at GP so generally try to adopt mother's attitude of ignore it and it will go away, but I have now made appt. She is on cow and gate 1yr+ which does list extra iron. Perhaps I should drop the formula and go onto cow's milk. So lovely to get another opinion, thanks.

I agree with homeboys. I'd definitely see the dr, but also feed her lots of baked beans, and squished up dried fruit (apricots / prunes / raisins etc). Also make sure that she drinks a lot - go for diluted apple juice if she tends not to drink that much water, as a lot of liquid can help to ease constipation. Not sure why you need to cut out bread or go gluten free though - not unless you have had some professional advice that that is what is causing it.

Good advice from everyone on here re: diet, water and allergies. If it doesn't go down on its own (most of them do once constipation relieved) you can use witch hazel as it will shrink haemorrhoids (used it myself after DD was born). Witch hazel can be a bit stingy but it works and is very mild without the chemicals that the adult over-the-counter preparations have in them.
