How to encourage a child to roll ?

I am a first time mum and have a baby girl who is now 16 weeks old. We went for our third round of jabs today and the health visitor said that she will start rolling in the next few weeks.
Im just wondering if there is anything i can do to encourage her or if its best to leave her to dicover it on her own.
Any advise would be great.

Its usually front to back first, so leave her on her tummy for as long as she will let you. (with my son it was about 22 seconds Hmm) and put things she likes over to one side just out of reach.

They generally get there on their own when the muscles are strong enough. My Boy didn't roll til 5.5mo so dont worry about it.

Thanks for the advise i will try that and see if she has a roll !! If not i will let her decide when shes ready. Good to know that not all babies roll around 4 months i was worried i hadnt been doing something i should have. Thanks again.

I immediately thought "push it down a hill" - but that's sausages isn't it? Smile

My two never rolled, or not until they could do (practically) everything else, including walking. I think dd may have done it a few times but didn't see the point. DS just started crawling. He is almost walking at just 10 months, so they are all just so different.

AngelDog · 10/05/2011 22:51

Rolling isn't a milestone they're 'supposed' to do - as latrucha said, lots of babies don't do it at all till they can do other things. My DS was 6 months, but I know lots who were 10 months +.

QuintessentialPains · 10/05/2011 22:55

You can also lie down on the floor and show her.

If that does not work, let her do it in her own good time. Smile

I think the only reason your hv made the comment was to warn you, not because it is something she has to achieve/do by a certain age. She may soon roll off the changing table, or the bed, unless you are extra vigilant!

Isthreetoomany · 10/05/2011 22:57

My DD didn't roll over either. I mentioned it at her 8 month check and she got referred for further assessment, the health visitor seemed very concerned about it. By the time her appointment came through she was 1 yr and had gone through crawling and onto walking without me ever seeing her bother to roll over.

matana · 11/05/2011 09:10

Tummy time on a soft 'moveable' surface like a bed. The first time DS did it was by accident on a springy surface where it was easier to get his arm into a position where it went underneath him easier because he was tilted sideways. He's 6 months and still hasn't rolled from back to front though, but is trying to like mad at the moment.

BeckyKay24 · 11/05/2011 11:42

All very helpfull. Thanks to you all for the reassurance that theres nothing to worry about if shes not rolling straight awayx

None of my 3 ever rolled. They have always been fine in other physical respects. They crawled, walked, climbed, etc at normal ages. Some babies just aren't rollers.

Woodlands · 11/05/2011 19:51

My DS has only just started rolling at nearly 10 months - I kept trying to show him how to do it before but he wasn't interested.

LawrieMarlow · 11/05/2011 20:11

I really wouldn't worry. DS rolled at around 4.5 months. Then didn't walk until 15 months.

DD rolled at about 11.5 months. She also walked at 15 months.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 11/05/2011 21:21

Just let her develop at her own pace would be my advice - and enjoy her at every stage without being desperate to get her onto the next!

Fennel · 11/05/2011 21:22

Rolling is an overrated skill anyway if you ask me. I mean, what does it achieve? Those inactive babies, they may be contemplating the meaning of the universe. And they don't fall off changing tables.

lurcherlover · 11/05/2011 22:11

DS is 6.5 months and showing no interest in rolling at all. I am enjoying the luxury of him staying where I put him until he learns how to crawl (obviously I don't leave him on a raised surface in case today's the day he makes his attempt - but I don't think he will!)

jjazz · 12/05/2011 19:58

Neither of mine did until after 12 mths!!! Both sat at 6 mths and crawled from 13-17 mths before walking- they vary so much you need to let her do it when she is ready! x

DialsMavis · 12/05/2011 21:31

I know DD (6 months) can as I have found her on her front with her feet to the top of the cot, right up at the top a couple of times in the morning but she never does it in the day time Hmm

MissBeehivingBlardySwarms · 12/05/2011 21:57

DS2 never rolled either as he was a little porker. He crawled at 9 months and walked at 11 months. Some babies just don't see the point of rolling Smile
