Hi Guys, I am 35 weeks pg now and just got some terry nappies from my NCT sale (bargin!). But I'm not sure what to do with them once they are dirty. Take them off and then what? I can't just dump them in a bucket...it will stink! Confused Help!

Once you take them off, first job is to remove any solids (this is the not fun bit, but suprisingly how fast you get over being squeamish about bodily fluids once you have a baby). You are supposed to be able just to hold the nappy over a loo and the poo falls out, this almost never works for me, I have to scrape.

Then you can just put them in a bucket, with a lid if you want and for added lovelieness you can get a terry wipe/ cotton pad and put lavendar oil on it to keep in the top. I actually keep all my used nappies in a bag. It's a wet nappy bag from Mommy's touch, and actually the zippers broken so it doesn't close, but it never smells.

You have to remember you will be washing every 2 to 3 days, I think that may be what stops it getting whiffy. When we do have to use disposables they go in the bin, full of poo, stay there for days and they STINK!

Thanks screamingeels...that makes more sense! I had images of soaking them all and having to disinfect stuff. But I can cope with a bucket! The bin thing was the deciding factor for us, we have a two weekly collection so it would have been really awful especially in the height of summer

this is a fab site for video clip guidance: www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledetails.aspx?id=281 all you tube clips and there is a really good one on washing and storing. basically what the PP said, but covers washing routine too. some other good vids as well

If you breastfeed you can sling the poo nappies in the machine. Its once they start solids the poo changes and you need to dispose of it.

Few drops of tea tree oil in the bucket is also good.

Get a mesh liner for the bucket too (available on the nappy lady website linked to above, amongst others) then you just lift the whole liner and chuck it straight into the machine so no need to touch any of the nappies.

Another tip is to do a cold rinse or prewash cycle first when washing the nappies as this helps to prevent smells building up in the napies.
