Rinsing cloth nappies before washing

If you rinse your nappies in the machine before washing, how long is the rinse cycle?

I put my cloth nappies through a (cold) rinse cycle in my washing machine before doing a wash with detergent, to help prevent them smelling of wee. (I think it was suggested by The Nappy Lady and it seemed to help when I started doing it).

But my rinse cycle is long - 54 mins - and I'm trying to reduce our water bill, so I was wondering how long I should let the rinse cycle run before stopping it while still washing out the wee.

Mine adds about 25 mins I think. But makes a huge difference to teething wee / ammonia smells from night nappies.

Mine is 24 minutes. I also find the cold rinse essential to get rid of those widdly smells (certainly if you're dry pailing - maybe if you wet pail you could get away with not doing a cold rinse, might be worth trying if you want to save water?)

Same as you OP. I didn't used to bother and couldn't get rid of that smell.

Mind you we have moved back to Scotland where water is not rationed in the same way!

I do a prewash instead of a rinse which adds 20 minutes. It is at 30 degrees rather than cold but seems to work for us as the nappies don't generally smell.

Could you set the machine to zero spin speed - would that speed it up? Or else stop it manually once it starts spinning as you probably don't need to get rid of all the water?

or do you have a quick wash setting thats shorter than 54mins?

that does seem like an awfully long time!

My rinse lasts for 20 mins on cold and i find it a must before washing or nappies stink! Maybe do what others suggested and swap to zero spin to speed it up

mackerella · 23/05/2011 00:14

Gosh, my standalone rinse cycle is only 8 minutes if I set the spin to zero! Confused It doesn't do much (in itself) to reduce staining in the nappies, but it does wash away all the poo and wee before the proper wash cycle. Mind you, we only bought this machine a month ago, and our (very) old one took over 3 hours just to do a 40 degree wash Shock
