EBF 2 week old - cloth questions!

DS has been in cloth since he got the meconium out of his system but...

His poo explodes everywhere. The paper liners we're using aren't saving the nappy at all! We're using Motherease one size and Terry squares, both are acquiring nasty yellow patches. Any poo which gets on the nappy is rinsed off but to be honest I think it's just liquid seeping through the liner. They're dry pailed then machine washed at 40 with some Mothercare sanitiser.

Sometimes they seem to leak when he wees, especially if he's being cuddled at the time! I guess that's a wrap issue? He's in a small, legs are on the tightest setting but there's still a gap and sometimes bits of nappy poke through anyway because it's so bulky.

He's got a bit of nappy rash despite frequent changes. We were washing with clean water and have tried chamomile tea as well. What can we use to clear it up that won't hurt the cloth? And is there anything preventative we can use?

Well, for a start you need to forget the paper liners until you start weaning, fleece is much better at this stage. It doesn't send the poo skidding out of the nappy and will keep his um dry too, helping with the nappy rash. Just cut up a fleece blanket into pieces the right size, no need to buy official fleece liners.

Metanium is the best nappy cream, it'll sort almost anything. The fleece liners will protect the nappies from the cream. Weleda nappy cream is a good preventative for when you see his skin is staring to be a little sore but no need to use as standard.

As for the wee leakage, it's probably because the nappies are to big, rather than the wraps, IME. how about using muslins for a while? they're so much slimmer and you change so frequently at this age that they have plenty of capacity.

What wraps are you using?

Sunshine will remove poo stains, it works really very quickly.

Washing at 40 without sanitizer is fine, do a cold rinse first to stop the stains setting so badly. You do need to wash at 60 after jabs / viruses though.

Do you reckon sunshine through a window would work? If I put the nappies out the humidity means I'd probably end up tumbling them to dry anyway.

Any bog standard fleece will do? Does it stay put well in the nappy? He's a bit of a wriggler and very often the paper liners are all scrunched up which I thought might be the problem but it sounds like paper is rubbish anyway.

Wraps are the Motherease Airflow in Small. We also have some lovely vintage 80s plastic pants my mother dug out as backups for when he poosplodes massively.

Agree to forget about paper liners at this stage. Don't underestimate how well sunshine works to get poo stains out. DD's nappies are stained yellow when they come out the machine, but a few hours in the sun and they're pure white again!
Fleece liners should stay in place better than paper ones will.

yy, sun through a window is fine, even in winter.

Fleece stys put really well, if I ever used paper it was over fleece and only for solidish poos. thye always scrunch up I'm afraid.

ME airflow are excellent, IME they wont be responsible for the leaks even if they are a wee bit big. Do you have any muslins laying about? Is well worth trying. Just fold them like terries.

I love MN - so helpful!

We have squillions of muslins, although using them for the 12 nappy changes a day plus mopping up after feeds may mean I need to do more loads of laundry per day. Or I could buy more. One can never have too many muslins, right?

Now to find a cheapy fabric shop near here...

'good' fleece doesn't go bobbly as quickly but TBH, cost wise, you're still better off using cheap fleece and replacing slightly more often (once a year ish as opposed to once evry 2 years)

Knofje · 04/05/2011 08:33

x posts! No, never possible to have to many muslins.

too

If you change from paper liners to fleece liners you might find the nappy rash clears up. I started using paper liners and DD1 seemed to always be having a rash, a friend told me to stop, switched to fleece and no more rash. The fleece kept her dryer and I think that the paper, even though it was soft, was irritating her skin as it bunched up in her nappy.
