Sleeping with a teddy bear or similar?

Hi,

When is it ok to introduce a teddy bear or something similar for my baby to sleep with? My 6 month old loves to hold on to something when she is falling asleep and we thought she would like something like a teddy bear but wondered if she's too young?! If it's ok is there anything we should avoid? Too furry is out I guess!

Ha ha, just re-read this and discussing teddys has made me laugh!

Thanks.

My DD had a very soft teddy (didn't really have any stuffing). I bought it before she was born. It was meant to sleep with the mother (to get her smell on it) and then transferred to the cot when DD was born. Think I got it in Mothercare?

Both DS1 and DS2 have muslin squares to hold to sleep. (Don't underrate the interchangeablility of comfort toys!) Soft toy menagerie also grown since little. Mothercare does those that don't say "Not suitable for under 3s", if you are worried. Smile

These are suitable from birth

if baby can roll over and back on her own i would say any soft toy (that doesnt malt or have bits like eyes that may be chewed off would be fine)

Both my DD 3.4 years and my DS2 14 months have had a comforter since birth (actually holding it from about 5 months) Most places sell them, DD's is from BHS and was about £11 and DS2 has two one from Mothercare the other Tesco.... the Mothercare one was bought for him so I don't know price the Tesco one I bought as a back up and was £5.

If I were to give a good piece of advice it would be what ever you choose make sure you buy 2.

DD has only 1 and several times we left it round someone elses house which involved a night time drive to retrieve, now she is old enough to understand ''poppycat'' stays in her bed. As for DS2 I brought 2 very similar comforters (couldn't get exact one) and one is for cot and one travels this way if I forget it we have a back up :)

I thought you weren't meant to put anything like a toy in the cot when they're really little?

Both my boys have a cuski. It is a breathable fabric that is suitable to use for babies.

I gave both mine a teddy at about 6 months.
I'm sure your dd will be fine with one. Maybe to relax yourself a bit, give her something that's quite light, maybe without stuffing so is like a cloth boddy with a head iyswim, then move it away from her before you go to bed. Once you start to see she is fine, you might find yourself becoming a bit more happy with it.

My DD got her real teddy that she loves dearly at around 18 months. Before that she had a square of fabric (one of my old t shirts) as her comfort item. And in made sure there were 2 squares in case one got dirty.
