Nappy changing and what to use underneath ?

Hello,

Have a four week old boy - Robin and quite regularly we have explosive accidents on the changing mat which wipes out the muslin square we are using underneath him and creates quite a mess on them. Is this what people use on a changing mat ? Was thinking of swapping to kitchen towel that can be then thrown away afterwards rather than requiring washing. Someone said some nasty stuff in kitchen towel but can't see a problem as won't be on it very long - any thoughts much appreciated on what other people do....

Many thanks,

Lawrence

isn't your mat a "wipe clean" one?

I have several terry cloth covers that get thrown in the wash when pooed upon or into a bucket of soapy water if the machine is in use.

You can also get disposable matts. I used those for awhile as well.

Thanks for quick replies, yes ours is a wipe clean one but it gets a bit cold and when we have used it with nothing on it seems to trigger him to pee which we don't always catch and can then up in a clothes change as well if he does a 360 arc !

I use prefolds (flat nappies) although I used to use a towel. Or you could try pottying as a much cleaner method of dealing with baby poo. :)

We had towels which we'd bung in the wash. Change mat was wipe clean too - just a quick wipe with anti bac stuff and it was fine.

We use small towels from Asda - they are the perfect size for the mat and are about £1.25 for two towels so great value too! I do put kitchen towel on top of the towel to catch the majority of any 'spillages' and use any clean bits to dry DS bottom too!

we use a towel.
easy to wash, plenty available, nice and soft for baby.

Cool thanks for replies will prob swap to combination of kithen towel on top of muslin to cut down on the washing.

Could you get one of those big rolls of paper like they having in the public baby change rooms? Not sure where you would pick one up but its a thought then you could just throw it away!

Guacamole · 01/05/2011 21:11

We went through so much kitchen roll it's unbelievable. But as we got better practised and the poo became less newborn we put a little cover over the wipe clean mat.

Zipitydoda · 01/05/2011 21:22

We used the absorbant Pampers disposable changing mats and also put a square of cotton wool on DS willy as soon as nappy was taken off; this absorbed most of the inevitable wee.

Reg the weeing: having a heat source at the changing table, so that it is nice and warm helps. Weeing when cold hits the body is a reflex. For this reason we have the changing table in the bathroom underneath the fan heater.

I used the toweling cover and a sheet of couch roll, which is the large kitchen roll stuff that Bears is referring to. You can obtain them from Viking; not sure where else in the retail world but have just googled and found them at Amazon - the price is quite reasonable really.

Bassface · 02/05/2011 07:36

Buy a load of cheap face flannels from the supermarket. They're about 20p each. We put one underneath our DS if we knew it was gonna be a messy nappy change and also lay one over him while we changed the nappy to stop the fountain effect if he did wee!

diyqueen · 03/05/2011 15:14

Just to add to the towel/flannel theme, I bought a load of small towels from IKEA - plain white terry, 19p each - bargain. They fit on top of the changing mat really well and dry quickly when washed. We've had the explosive incidents too and I've found it helps to leave the nappy strategically propped whilst cleaning our little one up (kind of pull it out from under her a bit but leave a clean bit underneath her, and the front up as a kind of 'wall').

pettyprudence · 03/05/2011 20:54

I do exactly the same as diyqueen - even have the 19p IKEA towels. blooming marvellous.
