I know you need to dilute fruit juice when you start weaning and I know it has something to do with protecting teeth; but when can you stop diluting juice? I'd like to use cartons of juice when out, have bought the Peter Rabbit ones previously but they are soooooo expensive?!!!!!! Anyone know??!

Tbh, I would avoid starting with fruit juice. It is unnecessary. Just take bottles of water out. Or buy a reusable bottle and dilute the juice yourself. Buying expensive diluted juice is ridiculous.

mamasos · 30/04/2011 09:31

precisely my point, anyone know when I can stop diluting it???!

AFAIK, they recommend diluting fruit juice for adults, because of its effects on blood sugar. Unlucky.

I have never diluted juice for any of mine - didn't know you were supposed to?!

Adair · 30/04/2011 22:34

You can get juicy water cartons in Waitrose or Asda. Sainsburys basics orange and apple drink cartons have juice and water (and sucralose)

I give mine a limit of one cup of orange juice a day. Usually with breakfast/lunch to help absorb iron. With a straw. A bit diluted.

They do have the odd day (parties etc) where they have more. But as they are also having biscuits and crisps and sweets, I'm not so concerned Grin.

Asda

rainbowinthesky · 30/04/2011 22:37

I would stick to water at this age, really I would.

Adair · 30/04/2011 22:39

Sorry, what's the age? Agree with just water for littlies. Dd was much older than ds when she first had juice.

Adair · 30/04/2011 22:40

Oh gosh, missed the weaning part. Yes, just water in a Tommee Tippee cup will do you fine!

CointreauVersial · 30/04/2011 22:42

I still dilute juice for mine, and they're 11, 9 and 7.

Mainly because they'll guzzle an entire large carton within minutes otherwise.

They didn't start with juice until they were 3 or 4, though, and only have it with meals. Water is much much better.

BertieBotts · 30/04/2011 22:56

The Asda and Tesco own brand cartons are diluted too. But if we're in a cafe or something I tend to get DS apple juice (undiluted) and he's 2.5. Shock horror! He mainly drinks water at home though so I tend to think once in a while is fine.

mamasos · 30/04/2011 23:27

wow didnt realise opinions would differ so much?! DD is 16 months?!!

(sorry think the weaning thing confused everyone, just seem to get info overload at weaning time then you're left on your own to figure it out aftere that?!!)

she does mostly just have water, but while it's really hot I thought some juice would tempt her more?!

BertieBotts · 30/04/2011 23:43

If she's thirsty, she'll drink :) I wouldn't fret. Are you still breastfeeding at all? If so that can be like a drink as well.

PassTheTwiglets · 01/05/2011 08:04

Oh goodness, defintitely no juice for a 16 month old! Water, water, water - that's all they need. Fruit juice is just soooo sugary and, 'good sugar' or not, it's still sugar. If they must have it, make sure it's not made from concentrate (I can't remember why but that's what my diabetes consultant told me!)

Panzee · 01/05/2011 08:06

I still dilute fruit juice for myself.
My son's 20 months old and has only had water.

yama · 01/05/2011 08:13

My eldest is 5 and she only gets water (or milk). Juice okay at parties. My dentist said it is the day-to-day diet that does the damage.

Sirzy · 01/05/2011 11:11

I agree with water if they will drink it! Ds is 17 months and spits water out as soon as it touches his lips, I have tried everything and still try but not getting hung up about it.

He has the tiniest drop of juice and he will drink it, much better than him not drinking!

Fizzylemonade · 01/05/2011 16:13

Ds2 only drinks water, his choice. He is 5. It is far easier than going down the juice route. If they haven't had it, they won't miss it.

As a family we drink water with our dinner. They are only allowed to drink water in school so stick with water.

Cheaper, readily available and conveniently from a tap Grin

starystar · 01/05/2011 20:28

I've given mine carrot, Apple and celery put through a fruit juicer at around 1 year. Occasionally have given a sip of juice when we're out but it is just a sip as he watches everyone and is so eager to drink from a glass, but personally I don't see too much damage giving a little homemade juice. But wouldn't give a carton of shop bought juice til older

tryingtoleave · 02/05/2011 04:57

No, I wasn't making the same point. Like everyone else I was saying that juice of any kind isn't necessary- water is fine. I don't know why you would want to pour sugar into your child. But if you do want to give juice then yes, dilute it, but with water from the tap.

lljkk · 02/05/2011 08:20

The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends diluted juice up until about age 5yo, I seem to recall. Juice can fill them up with relatively empty calories, that's the other concern.
I give 3yo DC4 pure juice because he doesn't drink much, anyway, and I can't get any form of fruit (& barely any veg) past his lips otherwise. I gave DC2 pure juice from about age 2yo because she barely drank any fluids at all, which became a health issue in itself, and I was striving to keep her fluid intake up.

brettgirl2 · 02/05/2011 13:10

This thread is mad. Not all will drink enough pure water dd just gets horribly constipated and ends up on lactulose. If a bit of fruit juice in a cup is so bad at 2 maybe I'll just put coke in a bottle. I really hate the judginess on this site - someone tries to ask a sensible question and gets a lecture.

bessie26 · 02/05/2011 13:47

I thought diluted juice was ok (teeth-wise) if you had it with meals? DD1 & I both have diluted juice (mine is 50% juice, hers is more like 20%) with our meals as vitamin C aids iron absorption. She's 2.5 now but has been having it with meals since she was about a year old.

If we're out for lunch somewhere then I'll just ask for an empty glass & dilute some of my drink down for her, or she'll just have water.

Ribena do cartons of water & juice (nothing else added) but can't remember the ratio or how expensive they were. (they were nice tho' !). I found them in the long-life juice section of the supermarket. Tropicana used to do cartons of fresh juice & water (found in the fresh juice aisle) but I haven't seen them for a while...

BsshBossh · 02/05/2011 14:03

We didn't give DD juice until she was 2.5 years old and even now she has it as a treat on odd weekends. We weaned her on full fat milk and tap water. She absolutely loves water and still loves milk. Her childminder give her water only too. DD does eat cakes on birthdays and special days and ice lollies on hot days but I really wanted to instill in her a love of H2O from the beginning. It worked (for now).

BsshBossh · 02/05/2011 14:10

Argh, my response came out very judgemental. Diluted is best if you want to give juice. I never gave juice, but agree every family is different.
