DS1 and 2 need their hair cut. Dropped in at a barber's not used before but where DD has had her fringe trimmed before and they are lovely. Both boys refused to have their hair cut. They are 10 and 6. The younger one looks adorable with it longer and his curls are coming back but the older one needs it cut before school starts again really. He only wants his usual hairdresser to do it but tbh she doesn't do it that well and now I am considering getting clippers and doing it myself.

Should I have made them have it done at the barber's? It was busy and I was imagining the tantrums, etc if I had made them.

Do it yourself! Hair grows back so whatever you do won't take long to fix, and if you really make a shambles of it then you can always take them along and have it done professionally another time. I've cut DD's hair and my own for the last two years. Definitely buy either proper clippers (with the grading attachments) or hairdressing scissors though - it's one thing you can't skimp on.

Not sure DH will let me but I might ask my neighbour who shears her boys if it is easy to do. Thanks.

Give the little darlings a choice... barbers with no nonsense before term starts or you'll save the cash and do the job with your pudding basin and sewing scissors!

Agree with missy - give them the choice of the barbers or yourself. Then carry it out. Worst case, it will be a 'learning experience' for both DSs and yourself! Best case, it will save you cost of future haircuts..

I bought clippers when my eldest was 3.

Haven't looked back. DH does his own now too instead of going to the barbers ever few weeks.

Eldest is 13 now and goes to the hairdressers by himself every 4 or 5 months but he has his styled long and she just keeps it under control and thins it out for him.

DS2 has his done on the longest settings so doesn't even look like it has been clipped.

And last week I did DS3 (2) for the first time, also on the longest setting just to try and tidy it up and work towards getting it even lengths all round.

Well worth the money and the clippers pay for themselves within a few months too.

Thanks everyone. I will give them a choice...

How important is this haircut? Will the school make a fuss/is it against regulations? I found when ds got to 9/10 that I needed to let him have more of a say in how he looks- but I made it clear that school rules are paramount. He went through a phase of being very longhaired and then suddenly decided to go very short.

IIRC boys hair has to be a maximum collar length. DS2's is over that but he is only 5 and I have only just realised it.
