10 Year Old DS - Toilering Accidents

I have a 10 year old DS and it seems to me he has a higher than normal amount of toilet accidents. He's my only child, so I have nothing to compare against.

He's never had so many accidents that I've felt it was a real issue, or that there was some medical reason, however he does seem to be quite accident prone. I'd say that typically he will have a daytime wetting incident once a month/6 weeks.

It seems that he just leaves it too long to go, and finds himself it a situation where he can't get to a bathroom in time. An example is this morning, where he wet himself in the supermarket because he'd left it too long. He did ask me if he could go to the bathroom, but had an accident on the way there.

He's not really a bedwetter, but we do have probably 8-10 accidents a year at night - this has been pretty typical since he was about 6.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated - do you think that this is an ususually high number of accidents for a 10 year old to have?

Sometimes they are only "small" (ie. not quite in time, but makes it to the toilet part way through "going") other times they are full on wettings like this morning. At night he's either dry or soaked.

He doesn't normally have accidents at school, but it does happen sometimes. Once so far this school year, twice last school year.

Thanks in advance!!

I don't remember either of my 2 having an accident once they were toilet trained at 3.
I do remember wetting myself at school when I was about 5 because I was too shy to ask to go to the toilet.
My sister had problems with my neice and she has a problem with her kidneys. I suggest you take him to the doctor as what you describe is not really the norm for a 10 year old.

My 10yr old niece has this problem and it was a bladder issue. Her bladder is too small and too sensitive. She is being treated. Oddly, she also doesn't drink enough. I don't know how that fits in but the doc said it was relevant. Maybe isn't using her bladder/kidneys efficiently.

I'd pop to a GP. My brother also wet the bed a couple of times a month and it was psychological. The GP helped with that.

I have looked after children for nearly 30 yrs . I have 2 grown up children of 20 and 23 yrs and a 10 yr old son. Your situation does sound very unusual to me.
i can kind of understand a 6 yr old maybe not able to hang on but not a 10 yr old. My Ds was wet at night till about 5 yrs and we still had occassional wet bed at 6 yrs .. Your daytime dryness should be surely wrapped up and ok by 3-4 yrs ????
I think perhaps you should speak to the Doctor about this as it is very unusual. They may have some ideas , for the sake of your son which you can implement. This could get really embarrassing in his teenage years if not sorted now.
Does he eat little and drink gallons of liquid ?
Does he live off juices, like Orange juice......
When my Ds was still wetting at night the doctors all advised only milk or water before bedtime. Any juices will make him wee more.
Your DS may have a small bladder like my youngest.

My Ds used to Niachi,he does have As, however that has nothing to do with it.(In my Ds case that is, not all children with As)He was leaving it to late, would laugh at something and wet himself, run to the loo wet himself a little on the way etc etc. In the end we pointed out that at 10 he was old enough not to do this and If it happens again neither his dad or I were going to be responsible for clearing up the mess or even aknowledge that it had happened. It worked and it hasn't happened for nearly 2 years now. But you know your son and what worked for mine might not suit yours.

that doesnt sound at all normal for a 10 year old.
(although many 10 year olds occasionaly or even often wet the bed)

agree that a trip to the GP is in order
