ikea cot or mothercare

hi- just that! we need to buy a cheap cot. Both Mothercare and Ikea have one at around £60. The Mothercare one has a drop side which I did find quite useful with dd1, but the reviews say the mechanism is flimsy and breaks easily. The Ikea cot has a removable side so will probably last us a bit longer?

Anyone got any opinions on either product? (or both!)

I have no idea about Mothercare chepish cot but I had a mothercare cot that was not cheap when dd was born and it was rubbish, the drop side mechanism was flimsy on that one and the cot never lasted until ds1 was finished with it and dd wasn't in it much past a year old so hadn't had excessive use, wouldn't buy another from Mothercare.

For ds2 I got this cot it is basic, doesn't have a drop side and I bought a decent matress from somewhere else to go in it. I love it, cot is good and solid when it's built and well worth the money I think.

I have the ikea cot and it's good. We cosleep so took one side off and have it next to the bed. Does exactly what we bought it for. No regrets.

The ikea one is really good - if you want to co-sleep at any time it's perfect to convert into a co-sleeper cot.

You won't be able to use it like a cotbed though as it's just a normal sized cot, most babies grow out of these physically by about 2. But if you start off co-sleeping and then want a nice low bed for the baby to get in and out by themselves when a bit older it's good. On the low setting it also is about level with a mattress on the floor so again good for transition.

Whichever one you get, the ikea mattresses are cheaper, and they're the same size.

I've never used the drop side on ds' cotbed either, so i'd just go for the one you prefer the look of more as both shall be doing the same job.

good luck!

I had the Ikea one, it was very sturdy.

Mahraih · 23/04/2011 09:52

I have the Ikea, no regrets, very good :)

ElsieR · 23/04/2011 09:58

I haver the Ikea cot. Very pleased.

FrogmellaMoonbeam · 23/04/2011 11:39

We have the Ikea cot, it has been in constant use for DS and then DD for 2.5yrs now and is still as strong and sturdy as the day we got it so would definitely recommend it!

CremeEggMcFlurry · 23/04/2011 15:15

We had the cheap Ikea one for DD1 and a more expensive one here for DD2 (from a relative) and I much prefer the cheap Ikea one!!

I never use the drop side so don't miss it at all and the expensive cot seems to be bulkier in the room so as soon as DD1 went into a bed I switched DD2 into the Ikea cot and the 'lovely' MC is sitting in the attic! If the only difference is a drop side, I'd go for the Ikea one.

Janoschi · 23/04/2011 15:35

We got an IKEA one (the really cheap £30 one) on recommendation from a friend and it's actually pretty sturdy. Very impressed. I checked out MC but heard a lot of negative comments so it did put me off.

MissCKitty · 27/04/2011 09:40

We have the ikea one and its fab. It can be set to different heights and also a removable side for when they are bigger. Its great and was inexpensive too Smile

Bumperlicioso · 27/04/2011 09:51

We are about to go and buy the Ikea one (£35) today for dd2. We had an old 2nd had possibly Ikea one for dd1 but it was falling apart (due to age and being taken up/down not through crapness). Never used the drop sides but then dd1 was 9 months when she went in and dd2 will be 7 mo.

trixie123 · 27/04/2011 11:57

we got the Ikea (Leksvig?) one and its great. As others have said its sturdy and well made. We are about to tale the side off for DS to try out as a bed as he is starting to bang against the sides a bit at 20months. One thing - don't lose the instructions as you might need them when you come to lower the base. we did but actually IKEA were fab and have this live online helpdesk that emailed them to us within about 5 mins.

Snarfle · 27/04/2011 12:17

We have just bought the Ikea three sided cot and attached it to the side of our bed with bungee ropes. It's great. We bought ther £35 foam matress which is also excellent! Would defo recommend.

boombaboomba · 29/04/2011 10:05

thanks ladies- ikea it is then.

When dd1 was little Mothercare was a one-stop shop for everything really. Seems its lost a lot of credibility in recent years

I bought the Ikea Sniglar or something as a back up cot. Was £25 and extremely sturdy.

mamasos · 29/04/2011 21:03

i got mothercare one and wish i'd got the IKEA one because as you said removable side will be useful waaaaaay longer than drop side was!

lechatnoir · 29/04/2011 21:47

I had the Ikea one for my 2 and it is great BUT given the chance again I'd get a cot bed - Ikea cots are smaller than most others and DS1 was quite long so we ended up getting a toddler bed and then a full size single - if I had just spent a bit more and got a cot bed it would have been cheaper than cot + toddler bed.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 30/04/2011 11:46

My ikea cot is not smaller than other cots, the matress I bought was just a bog standard average sized cot matress from toys r us.
Yes it is smaller than a standard cot bed if you are terming it like that but I have never felt that a smaller toddler bed had any benefits over going straight into a single bed so it doesn't bother me.
