Tempted to go back to disposables - convince me not to?

Am having a crisis so so tempted to jack in the whole cloth nappy thing and return to disposables.

Why?

  • am fed up of my fuzzi bunz leaking (had to change DD 3 times yesterday, this was using 2 large inserts after less than 2 hours)
  • fed up of trying to find clothes to go over tots
  • fed up of the downstairs loo stinking of poo and wee
  • nappies still stinking of wee after washing
  • trying to get them dry in this weather with no tumble drier (hard enough to keep on top of washing as it is)
  • DD2 due to arrive in January, can I be bothered with 2 in cloth

thing is I have 8 fuzzis, 4 rainbow bots, 3 MEOs, 1 bamboozle, 2 normal tots and a bumble I know it would be a huge waste of money to start buying disposables again and will save loads if DD2 uses them as well.

Help???

Tesco do good...disposables

Sorry, am feeling evil

Good luck with it! Seriously though, if you need a break from them for a bit, do it and don't feel guilty. You can go back once you're less heavily pg and the weather's a bit better.

ssd · 03/11/2005 21:22

HM's right!

good luck!

misdee · 03/11/2005 21:22

can u possibly get a small tumble dryer just for the nappies? or more airers?

the money issue is a big one, you could always take a break from cloth and go back to them. i sometimes use disposbles to allow me time to catch up elsewhere with laundry.

You can still get 'green' disposibles like moltex and other brands and you could sell your re usables on.

Rhubarb · 03/11/2005 21:24

Cats die if they eat the stuff in nappies, wonder why?
One of our nappies once ripped and the stuff went all over ds, not nice and it reminds you of how dodgy that stuff actually is - I was panicking like crazy in case some of it actually went inside him!

Also, they still stink of poo and wee.

And it takes like, ages, for them to degrade apparently. And you never see cloth nappies chucked outside Morrisons do you?

hunkermunker · 03/11/2005 21:25

Cats die if they eat socks too, I bet - but it doesn't stop me wearing them! Socks that is, not cats

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 21:28

Do you find one system of nappies work better than another? (we had consistent success with Tots and ME poppered wraps) If so you could sell the ones that don't work for your DD and buy some more of the ones that work well and even just do cloth part-time, would still save you quite a bit and you would have disps in the house to use if the washing was getting a bit much.

misdee · 03/11/2005 21:29

the gel stuff is yukky.

dd3 has horrible 'burns' from disposables. she reacts to the elastic in the cuffs. am glad to have her back in cloth this week, hopefully her skin will heal ok.

sweetkitty · 03/11/2005 21:29

I have bought some evil disposables from Tesco recently, put one one DD after 3rd fuzzi leaked yesterday! Hate the squidgy bum feeling when a disposable is wet though - yuck.

Just wish the fuzzi's wouldnt leak!

Hi Sweetkitty. sorry you feel so disheartened! All i thought reading your post was, hmm, wonder if I have these probs ansd just haven't noticed? I am SURE our loo doesn't smell, and our nappies don't after a wash either. So these problems must be surmountable. Obvious questions, washing temp, size of load etc.? do you dry pail or soak? I get a bit annoyed by the clothes thing but think it depends on what you want your child to be wearing: if you see an outfit you really want but it doesn't fit that must be frustrating. I find it less of a problem if DD just wears skirts/dresses or dungarees: trousers I need to make myself.

I have used fuzzi bunz and had leaks but generally don't have this with Bumbles and Motherease.

We dry ours on a pulley and it's fab; do you have one, or anywhere you could put one?

Our 2nd due in April. We'll see on that one!

BUT- ! lovely lovely cloth nappies, all touchy-feely and beautifully engineered! Compared to creaky, overadvertised, whiffy disps! Is there really any competition???

sweetkitty · 03/11/2005 21:32

I know spots this was the reason I turned to cloths and do like them but DD is a heavy wetter and even a tots is sodden after 2 hours.

I suppose I'll get over it (pregnancy induced rant)

OP posts:
spots · 03/11/2005 21:42

Thing is I suppose, she'll still be a heavy wetter in disps, and all that gel turns so stiff and clumpy... I think it looks really uncomfortable. I don't know much about the whole heavy wetter thing. Without wanting to sound sneery, it's not just different people's perception of wetness is it? prob. you've been using cloth for ages, but the wetness is just so much more noticable if you're quite new to them...

throckenholt · 03/11/2005 21:46

could be the wrap ? Maybe need a bigger one ? What way are they leaking ?

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 21:48

My DS1 was a heavy wetter and we used disps, occasionally they used to burst, which was horrible, he would usually be running round the house and all the gel bits would fall out his trouser legs. I'd have to hoover the entire house if I didn't catch him in time, we have had a few leaks with DS2 (in cloth from 8 months) but it's generally just a pair of trousers that need changed, rather than the whole house.

MrsSpoon · 03/11/2005 21:49

Good point about the wrap throckenholt, that can make a big difference.

sweetkitty · 04/11/2005 09:15

Just bought 3 new ME airflow wraps in large so know its not that (she doesn't leak in tots or MEOs) only the fuzzis.

She's in petite toddler fuzzis on the second last poppers so get a good fit.

Am going to have a break tomorrow wash all nappies twice with vinegar rinse (see if it gets rid of the smell) and start again Sunday.

I know how much she drinks during the day (a lot) so it's got to come out somewhere but I could wring a tots out after 2 hours sometimes.

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 04/11/2005 09:21

I've been told that the shape of fuzzis don't suit a lot of children, which could be the cause of the leaking

How about a bots with one of those microfibre thingies?

lauralou123 · 04/11/2005 09:32

Have you tried adding some lavender oil to the washing? I used to find our tots bots came out the wash still a bit stinky but putting a few drops of oil on a wipe in with the wash seems to do the trick.

throckenholt · 04/11/2005 18:13

ditch the fuzzis and use MEOS then !

Seriously - different nappies suit different shaped kids - so maybe your DD has grown out of fuzzis now.

You can always sell them.

sweetkitty · 04/11/2005 18:22

Sorry meant the second last poppers as in nearly as tight as they can go so don't think she's outgrown them yet. She's a wee tiny thing really.

The fuzzi's are the ones I like the best as they are so slim and DP doens't get all stressed changing them. Might be forced to sell them though

Have done a prewash, then a 60 wash and will add vinegar see if that helps.

donnie · 04/11/2005 18:47

I shouldn't realy say this but....go for disposables!!! you are very good to go down the environmentally friendly route but ebough is enough!!
that's my opinion anyway.

misdee · 04/11/2005 18:51

what are u using to boost the fuzzi? didnt get on with themn sometimes with dd3, they are good for short times (ie 2-3hours max), but i am awful and tend to stick with tots bot as sometimes idont get time to change dd3 that often. as long as she isnt pooey that is.

sweetkitty · 07/11/2005 12:34

Am using 2 microfibre inserts (as recommended by fuzzi bunz themselves).

Had disposbable weekend (yes she did leak once in disposbables) and am now back on tots bots. Smell seems to be a bit better after prewash and vinegar rinse.

I have a couple of gorgeous scarlet Fuzzis, which are worn about twice a week and so far so good, but I must admit I don't trust them for more than 3 hours and not when ds is taking a nap. There is something about lying down in pockets that doesn't work with him. I tried various sizes and have found the Medium is the best fit for him, so, yes, that is important to check.
However, they are great for out and about and quick changes, but I find stuffing them takes at least as much time as just putting on a fitted and a wrap. I can never find the right stuffing or decide how much to put in etc... So I think it's swings and roundabouts in terms of how much time they save.
Personally I would say keep a few Fuzzis and selll the others to fund a few new nappy purchases.
I think if you make your main nappies two piece, you will be able to relax and stop worrying about whether she feels damp or not.
Have a look at my nappy review blog , there are dozens of nappies reviewed on there. You might see something you fancy.
I would recommend Poochies or Happy Nappy Days with a strategically placed tots terry booster for slimness and amazing containment.

morocco · 15/11/2005 20:58

well i know what you mean at least
we're back on washables after 6 months break and I used them for 2 years with ds1 but I have to say it's a struggle to stay motivated right now, esp when out and about in town.
I love them overnight and they never leak but during the day, what a hassle!
anyway, I'm just gritting my teeth, trying to get on with it, drying them outside during the day when not raining and finishing off in dryer or on radiators even though that's not great either
ho hum
