Any tips for laying newborn down to sleep

Daughter is 3 weeks old. She normally falls asleep during or after a feed (breastfeeding). I wind her and then lay her down in her moses basket but she starts wriggling and cries out. I dont know if she's in pain with wind or just wants a cuddle.
Take now for instance, she's fast asleep on her back on my lap - I'm pretty sure if I try and move her to her moses basket she'll wke up the second I put her down.
Any suggestions?

Cuddle, cuddle, cuddle! It's the closeness she needs at this tiny, tiny age. There's plenty of time for her to sleep by herself as she grows, but for now, just enjoy it.

Have you got a decent sling? Godsend for if you need to get up for important things like tea.

My midwife suggested I put a warm hotwater bottle in the moses basket and remove it just before I put DS down and the warmth will trick the baby into thinking she is still against you.

I also used to swaddle to avoid the startle reflex which would then wake him back up.

with this weather though make sure you don't over heat the basket or the baby!

Cuddling is fine at this age, but not practical 24 hours a day! A sling might work while you'reup and about, but other than that swaddling worked best for us.

thanks, I'll enjoy the cuddles and get a sling for the daytime.

I used to put DS down for a nap on the bed; that way I could lie down and cuddle up to him to help him go to sleep - with my hand on his chest, deep breathing, sometime my letting him suck on a little finger - eventually it worked, then I could creep away very quietly and gradually. I also swore by swaddling.

Hi,

I'd highly recommend the Red Castle - Cocoon-a-baby.

I was introduced to this by a new client recently and will be recommending this in all future positions.

Swaddle as usual then put to sleep in the cocoon in moses or cot.

Read through all the information first and the web page link below.

I have a 4-week-old and know what you mean! The things I've found to work at least some of the time are:

  1. Making sure she is properly asleep/sleepy - waiting til she's relaxed and floppy before putting her down.
  2. Being as slow and gentle as poss with the transfer
  3. Leaving a hand on her/gently stroking her back for a couple of mins after transferring her so she still feels secure.

My ds wouldn't sleep in his moses basket until he was around six weeks old, as I think it was too big/wide for him and he felt a little lost. We ended up using the cot bit of the pram as it was smaller and he felt more snug. It is really difficult though as know how much newborns love to be held and have the body contact/warmth to sleep! Good luck.

Hi,

I agree with you maternitynursesaregreat! Cocoonababy is the solution!
Cocoonababy was introduced to me too and I love it and my baby too. She slept very well, felt secure, no reflux and I could take it everywhere, she was always happy!
The reason why babies love it so much is because, they feel back to their mother's womb. It id designed to reproduce the position they have in the mothers womb and the material used reproduce the elasticity of the womb.
It was originally used for premature babies in France and the benefits are better sleep, reduce flat head syndrome, reduce reflux, more interaction, happier babies. It is a very safe product as designed by medical experts after 10 years of medical and postural research.
I got all info from www.pacificare.com.au.

Good luck girls!
