Poorly 6 month old - Help!

Hi,

As I was putting my 6 month old baby to bed last night she coughed a bit halfway through her feed and then was violently sick I thought this was because she had coughed and it had made her sick. I then tried her on the rest of the bottle which she drank and kept down. However at 11ish she woke up really crying, we picked her up and cuddled her and thought maybe she was hungry as she had missed some of the last feed. As my husband sat down to feed her she was really sick, but then calmed down. After a little bit she took a couple of fl oz of her milk and went to sleep. This morning she woke up crying again, she was crying for a while and then I tried her on her bottle and she was hungry! She drank around 5oz and then was violently sick again. As soon as she stopped being sick she was calm and happier. She is now asleep in her cot.

My question is ..... What do I do about food? She is having breakfast and tea aswell as milk at the moment. Should I feed her as usual? Do I give her milk every 3 hours (when she would normally want it) -obviously sooner if hungry or only when she seems hungry even if that's less often? What about food?

Do you think it's a bug?

Thanks

It probably is a bug. I would leave off the food for a day and offer her milk little and often. Maybe an ounce an hour rather than lots every few hours. If she doesn't keep milk down at all then offer water instead (keep offering fluids).

It won't hurt her to miss a day or twos food at 6months old. Hope she's ok by thus evening. Smile

If it gets worse or lasts longer than 48 hours then a quick call to your gp would be ok for some advice and maybe some rehydration sachets to replace lost salts and enzymes.

Should I wake her for milk or let her sleep? I know she needs fluids but she also needs sleep!!

So no solids at all today? We've been weaning for a few weeks now, will it not matter?

Thanks

I would say the same - just milk and water (if she has water yet) and plenty of sleep. If she doesn't seem herself and seems to be getting dehydrated (floppy, lethargic, when you pinch her skin it doesn't spring back etc), then take her to the docs. You can give them a call as well to give you peace of mind.

And no, no solids will be fine! She's still got milk, which is mainly all she needs anyway at 6 months.

So do I leave her to sleep?

She takes her cup and enjoys playing with it but not sure how much water she takes in!!

Thanks

nhs direct symptom checker

She will be fine missing a day of food at 6months, its not her main firm of nutrition yet. It's rubbish when they get ill isn't it? My Boy 7.5m had a cold a couple of weeks ago and rejected all food, couldn't breathe and eat at the same time, bless him. He went a whole weekend without a problem. Just jeep pushing fluids.

I would let her sleep but offer as soon as she wakes.

My little boy had gastroentiritis a month or so ago at the same age as your LO - and what you are experiencing sounds similar. Rehydration sachets were given by doc - if her soft spot is sunken then she is dehydrated.

Advice was to give my DS milk little and often. We also laid off the solids for a couple of days even though we had been weaning for over a month by that point

Hope she feels better soon.

Hi there - my DD had something similar aged 9 months. She couldn't keep her milk down at all. What I did was to give her half strength milk, so it is not as rich, but she is still getting lots of fluids. She seemed to keep this down ok. The following day I increased to 3/4 strength, and by the following day she was back to normal.
Hope this helps.
