they are supposed to help when the little one start wriggling around so that they don't bump their heads on the bars. Mine was rubbish though to be honest.

I would not recommend them but they are meant to be used from 12 months onwards.

Oh - I just ended up using a couple of rolled & tied up towels. they were just as good

no point to them, they reduce the circulation of air inside the cot and prevent them from being able to look around when they're bigger.

Seona1973 · 01/11/2005 13:23

I never used them but they are suitable from birth until your lo is able to get up on their hands and knees as they could then use them to climb out. They should have been removed well before 12 months (12 months is the age for pillows, quilts, etc)

They can help stop your lo getting their arms/legs caught throught the bars and can help to pad the bars to stop them hurting themselves.

They have neither good or bad effects with regards to SIDS so are ok to use, if you wanted.

when dd was born i was advised not to use them because baby could wriggle under and get caught. Waited till 12 months to finally get them and John Lewis staff told me no, they were meant for little babies and its not safe over 12 months! go figure

olek · 01/11/2005 14:14

they do make the nursery look pretty though

jellyjelly · 03/11/2005 16:40

Health professional tend to not recommend them because they can keep the heat in the cot which is not good for the babny and then when they are older because they can be used to escape and of course get stuck under them.

starlover · 03/11/2005 16:43

ok well i have one to stop ds putting arms/legs through the side and to stop him bumping his head

he can't get stuck under it, it isn't attached at the bottom
he can't climb up it because it is tied loosely so if he pulls too hard it comes undone
if he wants to look around he can stand up... he's supposed to be sleeping there so doesn't need to look out anyway!

i think he likes it because it makes it more like his crib which had filled in sides

sweetkitty · 03/11/2005 16:45

I have them on DD's new cotbed (shes 15 mo) and have her pillow wedged up against it at one end, she tends to sleep with her face pushed right up against the cot so they cushion her a bit.

hunkermunker · 03/11/2005 16:48

Hmm, site's being updated, but there's usually a FAQ on here that says it's fine to use them - and these are the people who know, I think!

staceym11 · 03/11/2005 16:54

i have always used one (even tho the health visitors didnt like it due to cot death risks) but otherwise dd would roll and end up with twisted arms and legs and bruises, it really helped, she is 12 mth now and still has it as she hates not having one, if she wants to look she can sit/stand up, and she cant climb on it as it isnt done up tight enough and it falls down! lol think it depends on the child and what they like/dislike. but cant really understand how it could cause cot death imho!

That link is to the official SIDS research site, btw.

And what about babies who sleep in moses baskets happily for the first x number of weeks of their lives? Just as much air circulation (less, probably!) as with cot bumpers and nobody says not to use them!

JoolsToo · 03/11/2005 16:57

no point - no you don't need one

weesaidie · 03/11/2005 17:02

I don't see the point either but if you like the way they look (and they don't do any damage) fair enough.

Always struck me as one of those baby rip off things. Like changing tables.

starlover · 03/11/2005 17:06

me too weesaidie... but it does look nice! lol
wasn't going to get one but ds kept getting arms/legs stuck through the cot

and he squirms up in the night and ends up with his head against the top of the cot... so a bit more comfy lol

Bozza · 03/11/2005 17:13

I just stick a couple of teddy bears across the top of the cot. Since she already has Po and a puppy in each hand she tends to leave them where they are until morning.

Hello, I've got two questions - greedy me

My dd is three months old today and the last few nights she has been waking at least four times, when for the previous 3 weeks she was only waking twice - any advice????

We are going to put her into her own room after christmas and into her cot (and hopefully to sleep through)- any tips?

Thanks in anticipation!!

inameeting · 30/11/2005 16:30

Hi Karen - think you'd be better off posting your own threads for that so people with advice will see it in active convos

cot bumpers - my ds snuggles into the corner of his cot so bumper's essential, also it stops his dummies falling out all the time and prevents his limbs getting trapped. Don't really buy the "lack of air circulation" thing myself - cots are big enough to have plenty of air moving around in them, and bumpers are only a few inches high.
