Do I let my very inquisitive 4 year old ds watch a video of a birth?

Or is he too young? He is very bright and inquisitive and keeps asking where his new baby is going to come out. (I blame BBC's Lambing Live!)

I've explained it to him that he and his db came out of a cut in my tummy but they usually come out of a mummy's vagina. We always try to be open and honest with him but do you think it's a bit full on to let him see for himself?

I wouldn't. I just don't think a 4 year needs to know all those details. They don't really know how to process it all.

You're being open and honest by telling him.

peggotty · 09/04/2011 20:45

Oh god, no. Just no.

Meglet · 09/04/2011 20:45

No. He doesn't need to see it. Talking to him about it or showing him pictures in a childrens book should be enough.

think I would be cautious about the sound effects!

CoteDAzur · 09/04/2011 20:46

No! Are you crazy?

Itsjustafleshwound · 09/04/2011 20:46

No I wouldn't - there is a line between knowing too much and knowing enough

PrivetDancer · 09/04/2011 20:47

Well I would, assuming you will select a nice calm and simple one!
I don't think he needs to see someone screaming their head off and a crash c-section ;)

NorthernGobshite · 09/04/2011 20:51

Not unless you want to scar him for life!!

PrivetDancer · 09/04/2011 20:56

I am also assuming he has asked to see one, I wouldn't volunteer it.
I have a nice book (for kids) about homebirth which shows the baby coming out without being too graphic, perhaps you could get him something like that first? Unfortunately I'm trapped feeding DD at the mo and can't go and see what it's called. Was recommended on here though, so a quick search should find it.

Bloody hell, no

At most, a (drawn) picture in a book

youretheoneformefatty · 09/04/2011 21:02

Yes. On reflection, if this had been posted by someone else I would probably be advising No! I think, because he is very mature for his age I am guilty of forgetting that he IS only 4 and some things are best left to his 4 year old imagination!!

Thanks for your replies. I think I'll leave it to Kate Humble and the crew for now! Blush

The thing that would worry me the most is that very often inquisitive children have the ability to ask very personal questions at the most inappropriate times ... and believe me, the questions will come .....

BTW, yes I have a book with a few pictures in it. Thanks privet.
