Help me with my Motherease!

Hi, I have been given some motherease one size and airflow wraps (from freecycle, yay!) but have a couple of questions for you good nappy experts!

  1. I don't know what size the wraps are - they are about 47cm when opened up, top to bottom. Could anyone have a measure and let me know which size this is? They seem pretty baggy on my 14 lb boy but the legs and tummy fit ok.

  2. the elastic bit on the waist of the wrap - is this meant to be pressing on his skin or on top the nappy?

  3. do I need to fold the top of the nappy over ?

  4. the bit touching his skin seemed really soggy after only half an hour, how can I stop this?

Thank you for reading and hopefully for some advice!

  1. If they are snug round legs (you can get a finger or two in but not more) and tummy, that is fine. You will find out if they are the wrong size as they will leak
  2. On his skin or the moisture at the top of the nappy will leak out onto clothes
  3. Yes it is best to for boys but yours may not be a heavy or enthusiastic wetter so it depends on him how necessary!
  4. Buy a piece of fleece from the market and cut it into strips (about 12cm x 25cm) and use as reusable liners. Fleece wicks away moisture - but don't expect disposable type dryness. It doesn't need to be that dry, but you will need to change every 2-3 hours IME

HTH.

Sorry just realised I'm not sure if I understood what you meant by folding the nappy over - do you mean the booster that pops inside the nappy? Fold that over. If you mean the nappy itself then yes if it fits your DS better but don't worry either way, as long as DS is comfortable and not leaking, it's fineSmile

Without boosters you will find that the nappy ges wet v quickly. I use a mixture of terry nappies and prefolds - also v cheap or available quite often on freecycle.

  1. can't find a tape measure atm, but 47 sounds like it could be a large. bagginess doesn't matter though, as long as it's relatively snug around legs

  2. it should rest on his tummy, not the nappy otherwise the wetness from nappy will wick onto his clothes

  3. no need to fold the top over, that's really for if you have a little newborn, but if they fit ok without doing it then that's alright. it makes them quite bulky otherwise

  4. buy the stay-dry liners which popper in. or, buy a big piece of fleece and cut into nappy sized pieces to line them with

Thank you! Both very helpful! This is my first venture into reusables as you may have guessed (and also first thread on mn.)

I don't have any booster bits to pop in so maybe that didn't help with the sogginess. (The lady who gave me them said she didn't need them.) Will have to get some.
Provincial Lady, did you mean you would put bits of terry nappy inside the Motherease one? Is that as well as some fleece and the popper in bit?

Do you find their bottoms get sore if it isn't dry in there?! Am used to lovely dry pampers bot, but really do want to give reusables a try.

Thanks again.

Yes, I use a folded terry nappy/prefold and a fleece inside a motherease, especially as the baby gets older and wees more. Motherease are great, but they are only good by themselves for a limited time.

Neither of my boys has got sore from wearing cloth nappies, but they (the nappies) are always going to be wet as soon as they are weed onGrin A barrier cream can be useful if you have a sensitive baby, eg sudacrem (but only if using a fleece liner as it will spoil the cloth otherwise and stop it from being absorbant). Neither of mine have needed it though. You do need to change more frequently than a disposable but the advantage is, for a boy, that their little testicles are not getting too hot and affecting their future fertility. That was a big selling point for me.

I used these just choose "dry" from the drop down box

they are a booster with a "stay dry" top

Thank you, those look good thisisyesterday.
Yep I suppose wee = wet nappy! I didn't know that about the fertility. Thanks again.
