Scooter for 3 year old

Having found the buggy board to be an all round disaster (which luckily broke so the brand new replacement from Kiddicare went on Ebay) I am looking for a scooter for DD.

Is it worth paying £50 or so for the Mini Micro thingy, or is there another make that does the job? Haven't seen anything local come up second hand and I've been looking for a while.

When my 5 year old was 3 had a 3 wheeler Roary the racing car scooter. ToysRUs I think. Very sturdy and still ok now. Not as Trendy as mini micro things though..

Just bought my 2 year old the micro scooter - not themini the next one up as it's height goes down to the same as the mini. DD loves it and has made walking MUCH quicker and easier!

In a word, yes!

get the micro, they are great! best money i ever paid for something - used practically daily, my dd loves it, she has had such fun on it. i sometimes feel like sending the company extra money as it is so worth it! Feels like a big outlay, but it has paid itself over and over in use .....
(although it might be trendy, it is such a great design)

theghostofposhlymanor · 05/04/2011 13:12

Yes the micro is good, my DD has one.
It is extremely light so very easy to carry around - DD can carry it up and down steps herself. Very important for me too as I often end up carrying it, especially in shops and places where it's busy so DD can't scoot.

I reckon it will last her a good while yet, they're quite 'cool' looking so older kids admire it. DD's 6 year old friend plays on it and my 9 year old niece also asks for a go!

atmywitssend · 05/04/2011 13:15

They are brilliant - would highly recommend them!

Allegrogirl · 07/04/2011 11:04

I think you've convinced me. 2BoysTooLoud DD has a chunky Peppa Pig scooter that lives at the GPs and she does love it but I'd like something smaller for when we're out and about with DD2 in the pushchair.

I was a bit put off going for the 'trendy' option, but if it's that good I'll go for it.

Micro scooter here again. Ours is on its 4th year, second boy and still going strong. One of the best things I have ever bought them!

Allegrogirl, what was wrong with the buggy board? DC2 is due in September and that is what I was planning to get DD1 (2.9 by then).

I might invest in a scooter instead if a buggy board is a waste of money...

Allegrogirl · 07/04/2011 11:23

reddaisy the buggy board didn't work for us because:

After DD2 was born I think DD1 resented giving up the pram a bit even though I'd had to fight her into it for months.

I walk quickly with a long stride and found the board got in the way of my feet and holding the pushchair at arms length made me uncomfortable. I was exhausted walking a couple of miles.

DD didn't feel secure on it and getting up and down kerbs was a nightmare as she was too scared to stay on.

She could jump off when she liked with no warning resulting in injury to both of us.

I couldn't force her on it when in a strop (she went through a challenging phase over the Winter maybe due to DD2?)

Our pushchair has a pram handle that got in DD's way which probably explains why it was so uncomfortable for both of us.

I have heard people on MN say they can walk miles day with a buggy board but I'm baffled as to how. We've got a 2.10 gap and I swore I wouldn't need a double buggy. I gave in and bought a second hand one to get over winter bugs and a phase of awful behaviour.

I don't think you can know what will work until you are in the same situation to be honest. I have friends with similar age gaps who love the buggy board but they don't walk the distances we do, and their children are more compliant than mine.

Mini Micro is great - definitely worth the money.

mamasunshine · 07/04/2011 12:38

As dancergirl put it Smile Have one for my just 3yo ds!

cornflowers · 07/04/2011 14:16

another vote for the mini micro, my dd (4) takes hers everywhere

reddaisy · 07/04/2011 16:26

Allegrogirl, thanks for the detailed answer! I don't have many friends with children in RL, particularly older ones so the info is great.

DD also rarely uses her buggy now but I can imagine that she will regress when the baby arrives. I might get her a scooter soon too to get her used to it so when the second one arrives I'm not trying to cope with both.

Do people who have them think they are suitable for a 2.3 year old?

littleducks · 07/04/2011 16:33

I bought a mini micro scooter for my two year olds birthday (he had been trying to steal them whenever they were left at the edge of the park/outside a cafe/toddler group for months)

For a two year old I would definately recommend it over the others as it is stable and can stand up without falling over.

My dd didnt get a scooter till 2.5 and started to really use it the following summer at three, she has the cheaper my first scooter which she still uses at 5 having converted it to two wheels recently.

reddaisy · 07/04/2011 17:22

Thanks littleducks. I might give it a try.

Llanarth · 07/04/2011 17:27

the only thing I would say about the mini-micro is that it is stamped on the bottom that the max load weight is 20 kg, and my just-turned 3 year old already weighs that. In hindsight, I wish I had bought the micro instead...

shrinkingnora · 07/04/2011 17:44

We had this for DS1 when he was three. Very sturdy but took him a little while to get the hang of it. DD (7) has one too and loves it.
