Hi everyone after debating for a year on weather I wanted to my DS to go to the catholic school or another very good school. I put down the catholic one, first choice, then the very good one as our second choice. I moved him to the catholic nursery and now he did not get in. I am so disapointed. He has been doing so well and he does really like it there. He likes it there after being unhappy at the other pre school. Well I am totally gutted. Anyone else appealed and got the school. What is the likelyhood?

so did you get your first choice?

i think you're unlikely to get anywhere with an appeal unless you feel you have been unfairly left out iyswim? if they're oversubscribed and other people live closer or fulfill more of the entry criteria then that's that tbh

No we got the third choice, which at the time although we thought he might be ok, we have come to realise that it is far too big for our DS who is very shy and needs a small school. He would get lost in it and will close down. He would just not cope.

I think you'd have to have grounds to appeal based on the admissions criteria rather than just you really want a place.

I appealed to two catholic schools, our first two choices, we got none of our top three choices. Our appeals were based on the fact that we want our child to have a catholic education, we are part of catholic community etc. Our appeals were unsuccessful as we expected, but they did serve to makeus known to the two schools. They have since been great, and we finally (after two terms at our local school) got a place at one of them for ds to start after Easter. I think you have to be aware that you can only have a successful appeal for a reception place if you can prove there was an error in the application of the admissions criteria, or you have a statement of sen. Without either of these, you certainly can appeal, but it is unlikely to be upheld. There is a 30 child limit on foundation stage and ks1 classes, to have more, the school would have to employ another teacher so this does not happen. However there is a little more leeway when your child gets to ks2...

Hth, is not a nice situation to be in. I was distraught, but my ds has got on so well at our local school that it was a hard decision to make to move him in the end. Maybe we have best of both wordls, he certainly has many more friends local to him than we had before...

Good luck!

Ps the reason we know have a place is because another child is leaving, nothing to do with our appeal reasons, but we were first on the list.

you could ring the school and ask to be put on a waiting list if they have one

Boblina · 04/04/2011 21:29

I shall def ask about a waiting list. Shall talk to them first thing tomorrow. Thanks for letting me know. Hope there is a waiting list.
