Have just left DS in his cot to grizzle/cry because I can't take any more today

He has been crying/grizzling/making monotonous grunting noises since he woke up early this morning. It was about 4.45am. I'm knackered and so close to shouting. I'm ashamed to say that. He's 5.5 months old. I have no idea what the problem is - he's not obviously ill and is eating fine.

I'll get him in 10 mins or so but I need to just compose myself to deal with him. I'm counting the seconds until DH gets home from work. I feel terrible.

Thanks so much everyone.

This afternoon was a little better and we went out for a walk with a friend. Lovely to get out. DS has been a bit more cheerful and went to bed at 7pm - so far, so good.

SushBaby - I'm a huge believer in bouncy chair and cbeebies. Alas, DS is vast for his age and got too big for his chair about a month ago Sad. On the positive side, we're borrowing a baby/toddler rocker from a friend tomorrow.

was also thinking teething and calpol...

Hope your ok Honeybee, ds had colic right up until teething and when it got too much I just had to go outside and take deep breaths. It does get better and teething can (and does in my experience!) cause an upset stomach.

How long does teething last?! Have just had a good look in DS' mouth and couldn't see any sign of teeth . . . But then the drooling and hand sucking would indicate that they're on their way.

calpol.

colditz · 05/04/2011 08:22

could last several weeks, sorry

CinnabarRed · 05/04/2011 08:51

Yup, several weeks wouldn't be unusual. But the pain does seem to come in waves, so you do get a few days of respite between the bad ones.

Once the teeth are near the surface (gums get very lump and get paler where the tooth is about to cut through) then Bonjela is very effective - doesn't seem to work much before that, I assume because the pain is too deep in the gums for the gel to reach.

Honeybee79 · 05/04/2011 09:39

I was assuming weeks. If that's what's causing the issues then fine, at least I know what it is, how I can try to help and that it will end at some point!

At 6am this morning it seemed more like general angst but, hey, 6am was a huge improvement on the night before so perhaps we're making progress . . .
