Newborn bottle feeding frequency

Hi,

My ds was 9lb born and I breast fed him for 10 days. Now I bottle feed him and he is now five weeks old. He usually feeds every four hours (sometimes goes 5 to 5 and a half) and takes 5oz. We feed him on demand as he has very dood feeding cues. He always feeds five times a day.

For the last few days he has started to get restless through the night, waking up three hours after his feed and struggles to rest back to sleep (he sleeps in our bed so has plenty of cuddles to help him back to sleep). He then gives us his feeding cues about an hour or so later. I am wondering if this restlessness could be a sign he is starting to get hungry and so instead of waiting for his 'usual' feeding cues I should feed him then? Also wondering if I should try and feed him more frequently through the day - maybe every three hours even if he is not 'showing' me he is hungry?

Any advice?
Thanks

i always fed my DD every 2.5-3hours at that age. To me it felt that 4 hours was too long. My aim was to get the required amount of calories and hydration into her during the day so she would be more able to sleep through the night. I think 5.5 hours is too long really to go between feeds on a regular basis unless it is overnight.

re the night wakings, a growth spurt at 6 weeks is pretty common. All that extra growing requires extra food. I would feed him when he wakes and you will probably find he settles back to sleep very quickly.

HTH and congrats on your little one Smile

I fed my DD every 3 hours during the day (and still do now she is 13 weeks - although i'm gonna try and move to 4 hourly soon) - i think she was more settled that way, and she has slept through from 10 weeks.
