Leaky Tots Bots...what am I doing wrong?!

Hello!

DD (nearly 8 mo) and I are fairly new to reusables, and are having problems with our Tots Bots. They're the pocket, one size ones. (Bright oranges, yellows, greens.) They seem to be leaking/wicking wee round the legs very quickly...as in I put her in one at 10 today and by 1115 her leggings were a little damp.

Is this normal or am I missing a trick?! The Real Easies I've got haven't sprung a leak yet but I've only got 2!!

Thanks!

Try using ann extra booster.

When you take off the nappy is the insert very wet? If it isn't then I would think it is the not the absorbency but the fit that is the problem.

Can you change the size setting to get a better fit around the leg?

Is she wearing a popper under the bum vest? With mine, those vests are quite tight on the washable and cause wicking, try a bigger size of vest or some vest extenders.

With mine, changing those two things solved the problem, good luck!

She may need to go up a popper size. I found that doing that solved my leak problems at various times. Also agree that too small vests can cause wicking.

I use my Tots Bots with a little lamb bamboo booster. You can get 12 for £12 on ebay and they make the nappy last for 4 hours no problem.

I found changing wraps made a difference. I really don't rate TotsBots wraps. Nature Babies are good, as are One Life.

We get leaks with our easyfits too if left on for more that 1-2 hours, they just arent absorbent enough for us. Try boosting, or maybe use vest extenders in case if is compression leaking

Interesting, thanks all. The insert isn't soaked, it just seems to wick out round the legs.

As a rule of thumb if you are getting leaks and the nappy / insert is sodden all the way through then you need to add more absorbency. I use slim hemp boosters as they fit nicely into pockets without adding too much bulk and are very absorbent. Place them under the microfibre insert or if you are using 2-parters between the nappy and the wrap.

If the insert is not fully wet but you are still getting leaks then either the fit of the nappy is wrong or you have build up of detergent. If the leaks are at the waist band then you probably need to increase the rise (height) of the nappy, this is common in birth to potty nappies which need adjustment as the child grows. If the leaks are at the legs then check how tight the fit is around your babies thighs. You may need to adjust the leg fit if you can, or in older or faulty nappies the leg elastic may have gone. Watch out too for pressure wicking, e.g. if your child is in very tight trousers which press hard onto the nappy this pressure will cause liquid to draw out of the nappy rather than staying put...........Or it may just be that the nappy doesn't suit your child's build, not all of them do all kids which is why we suggest trying a few different styles before you buy (see about or hire kits on the incentives page). Plus when kids first learn to walk / move they thin down and change shape and this can sometimes affect the fit of a nappy, especially on a more slender baby - although they will soon grow back into them.

If fit doesn't seem to be a problem, then do an absorbency test. Get a clean and dry nappy and dribble a small amount of water onto it from your fingers. If the water soaks in then all is probably OK, but if it stands as droplets for a while before soaking in, or simply runs off then you have detergent build up and need to strip wash your nappies (see above). Detergent build up can also be detected by a cabbagey smell on the nappies.

To be honest maybe these ones aren't right for us, I find the outers really crunchy.
