When can my newborn have products in his bath?

I want to start putting a baby lavender milk in DS bath on a night time to help him relax. He is only 5 weeks old. Am I supposed to wait until he is a few months before I introduce anything into his bath?
Thanks

I still don't put anything in my 6 mo's bath but mainly because I'm worried about it getting in her eyes and stinging.

I say try it one night and see, if it's formulated for little babies its probably fine. They don't need it though.

Lots if babies can't because they have dry skin, my son is one. If your son isn't prone to it then I would try it.

just put a few drops of lavender oil in. i did that when dd was a new born.

i think the main problem is that some products can dry out your babies skin and babies are more prone to eczema. Try the lavender milk and keep an eye on your babies skin, if after a few baths his skin looks blotchy i'd stop using it.

I used things on mine around that age, just try it once and see if he reacts to it or not?

My ds1 is 23months and I still don't put anything in his bath, that goes for the 6month old too.

Most baby stuff (especially johnsons,) is packed full of chemicals and can be really bad for babies skin.

I use a tiny bit of burts bees baby wash on the toddler if he gets particularly dirty from garden/park etc but apart from that just warm water.

Remember if he reacts to whatever you use there's always the fall back option of a nice massage after his bath to help him relax.

(although my sons hated it, most babies like it Grin )

I was going to go to a baby massage class but was told not to attend as my ds was so young. Can you do baby massage on a 4 week old?

you can do baby massage on a baby of any age - whether they like it or not is a completely different question - my DS hated it but lots of the other babies in the class i went to seemed to enjoy it.

Snarfle · 27/03/2011 17:32

Can you recommend any good websites or books about baby massage please?

i did a tiny bit of massage on ds's legs from day 1 - just rubbing oil into dry skin counts! he was really sensitive and jumpy so now at 8 weeks can just about manage to relax a bit! i had a teach yourself book for ds1 that had good step by step pictures. i mainly did legs and repeat each move 5 times - up and down legs, rub up and out, sole of foot, each toe, then big sweeping move up the leg again. then a bit of baby 'yoga' which was just moving legs together round in circles, up and down, bicycle movement. when they were older i did the same on their arms and hands then a bit on their face - eybrows, cheekbones, jaw. everything really slow and gentle and you can just make it up really.
