readybed for 13 month old?

need some advice. Am taking DD, who will be 13 months old, to australia to visit my family. I will be travelling solo as DH cant get the time off work.

Will be staying in a hotel for the first week and then with family for the last 10 days. THe hotel cant supply a travel cot and DD is the only little one in the family at the moment, all the others are bigguns so no one has a travel cot that we can borrow.

I have been looking to buy one and as expected they are all fricking enormous and weight a tonne. Way to big for me to manage by myself through airports etc with other baggage plus DD. I dont want to get one of those tent ones either. My friend has one and DD has slept in it and managed to tip it over and roll it across the floor like it was one of those Aeroballs. She is a sturdy little thing, 99th centile for height and weight and wears 18-24 month clothes. She is toddling at the moment and i expect by the time we go, will be walking properly.

THe only one i have seen which i think would be sturdy enough and would pack down to a small enough bundle to go in a suitcase is the phil and teds traveller but at £100 min i am hesitant to take the plunge.

A friend suggested i look at getting a readybed for the trip. I have looked at them and they do look good (i especially like the price). She has a nap in something similar at nursery and sleeps fine on it but i am concerned that for night time sleep it might be better to restrain her in the confines of a cot.

So my question is, has anyone used a readybed for a child so young? and if so, how did it go?
If you think it is a bad idea, can you recommend a good travel cot that doesnt cost the earth and packs down nice and small.

all thoughts and suggestions greatfully recieved Smile

We've had an inflatable ready-bed for DD since about this age. DD only sleeps in it at weekends and sleeps in my bed during the week but she loves it and wants to sleep in it more often. (I keep her with me during the week when I'm working because she's less likely to wake in the night when co-sleeping.)

There haven't been any problems but as the bed is in my room with nothing dangerous to hand, it wouldn't matter if she got up by herself and wanderered about.

I saw some in ToysRUs the other day, inflatable and pretty cheap but wouldn;t restrain her in any way. If you think that wonlt be a problem that sounds like the way to go

My DD has slept in a ready bed a couple of times and on both occasions she rolled right to the edge and the bed flipped over on top of her. She woke up frightened both times because she was still inside the bed while it was upside down.

I would recommend a Gro-bag and a little foam camping mat instead. They can't flip over in the night and cover her face.

I think they are from 2 years.

I just used to fold up a duvet and put that on the floor and then lay my children on that. Could the hotel not provide you with a spare duvet? Alternatively could she not sleep with you?

there is a ready bed i saw in a mag the other day its specifcally for smaller children and it has inflatable sides iykwim they are the same price and i think they are slightly smaller so would take up less room sorry dont know how to do a link

Thanks for the replies.

This is the readybed i was looking at.
www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-My-First-Ready-Bed/dp/B001TH78EE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1301090785&sr=8-3
It has bumper sides to stop her rolling out in her sleep but as Trixie said, it wouldnt restrain her.

to be honest, without giving in and getting a traditional travel cot or the solid gold plated P&T or BabyBjorn cots i dont think anything is going to restrain her.

She could sleep with me, but i am not sure i would get any sleep being worried about rolling on her, or her deciding to crawl of the bed.

Duvet on the floor is an option i had not thought of.

We might give the ready bed a trial run before we go away and see how she does on it. If it doesn't work for her now, it will later in the year so it wont go to waste.

many thanks.

I don't want to be negative, but we bought DD one when she was 2 and she just did not get on with it at all. Kept rolling out etc.

I think you are right to trial it before you go. Am SURE you will pick one up off ebay second hand very cheaply. We sold hour Dora one on there for a song and it was just hardly used.

If not joy I would look into hiring a cot and getting it delivered to the hotel. We always do this when we go on hols to America. You google something like baby equipment hire, and the region/city you will be in and see what comes up. Am sure you could find a service in Australia online. My mantra with kids is that if you've got a problem, you can be sure as eggs is eggs that some bright spark has found a solution to it and is making money out of it.

We got cot, buggy, box of toys etc. They would probably drop it at your hotel for your attention, in time for your arrival, and then would pick it back up from the hotel reception.
